We are committed to continuously improve the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation. The Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL) is a collaboration between the University of Pittsburgh, the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and UPMC Health System. HERL is dedicated to wheelchair and mobility research, specifically by improving the mobility and function of people with disabilities through advanced engineering in clinical research and medical rehabilitation. HERL also studies athletics in rehabilitation, assistive living spaces, the efficiency of wheelchair transfers, clinician training, and force and vibration on wheelchair users.

Got a 3D printer? You can now download free designs to create adaptive gear that opens up sports for people with disabilities.

VA engineers at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories teamed up with the University of Illinois to build a free online library of DIY adaptive sports and recreation equipment. Everything can be 3D‑printed and built for under $100, with designs for activities such as billiards, mini golf, swimming and more.
