🔬🏅 Last week, two students competed at the state level of PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science)!

To qualify for states, students first had to earn a 1st place award at the regional competition held this past February.

In March, Ms. Santana Eugui’s College in High School Spanish students brought the past to life by creating narrated timelines that explored the historical context behind influential works of art - all in Spanish!

Our visit to the “Latin American Cultural Center” gave students the chance to step outside the classroom and immerse themselves in the art, culture, and stories of the Spanish-speaking world. ✨

One of the highlights? A fully immersive guided tour in Spanish led by Dr. Manuel A. Roman-Lacayo! Students analyzed artwork, connected historical events, and practiced past-time narration while engaging with diverse artistic traditions from across Latin America.
Experiences like these show that language learning goes far beyond textbooks; it’s about making real-world cultural connections. 🌎

Take a Father/VIP to School Day was a huge success! ✨ We had so much fun welcoming all of our special guests and making memories together. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so special for our students! 💛

In our Nature Unit, Spanish 4 students learned about Pachamama and how Andean communities interact with the nature. To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, students had fun sharing photos of themselves picking up trash, cleaning the environment, or planting flowers and plants. They enjoyed asking and answering questions in Spanish about their Earth Day projects. A special thank you to the ambassadors from Pitt’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) for visiting our classes and leading a fun, interactive Spanish presentation about diverse ecosystems in the Americas and climate change. Students also enjoyed learning how to make paper flowers! 🌱🌿

Couldn’t end Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week without saying thank you to an amazing team. Your hard work and dedication never go unnoticed! 💙

On May 6th, our NHS students showed the staff just how much they appreciate their teachers by hosting a Teacher Appreciation Car Wash… yes, even in the rain! 🌧️🚗

Our students washed cars, attempted to dry them, cleaned windows, vacuumed interiors, and tackled everything from “Why is my hand sticky?” to “Why did they ask us to wash this when there is only one crumb?” 😂

Through the rain and cold, they completed over 20 cars during the school day so our teachers could head home a little more relaxed. By the end of the day, our students went home soaking wet, freezing cold, and completely exhausted — but they worked hard with smiles on their faces the entire time.

We also have a few BIG shout-outs:
⭐ Mr. Allen, father of NHS member Tyler Allen, for donating all of the car wash supplies, towels, window cleaner, and the hose.
⭐ Mr. Miller for letting us borrow the F&F shop vac and extension cord.
⭐ Mrs. Warren and all of her 6th graders for sacrificing some warmth while we borrowed electricity!
⭐ Dr. K and her advisory for bringing us a much-needed lunch — we devoured every bit of it!
