Competitors from SciTech FRC 8705 and Mechasharks 3900 attended the IEEE Robotics conference at the David Lawrence Convention Center last week. The IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) is one of the largest and most impactful robotics research conferences worldwide. This event brought together researchers, engineers, and industry leaders to Pittsburgh, a city at the forefront of robotics innovation, home to world-renowned institutions and cutting-edge autonomous vehicle companies.

Students had the opportunity to explore the conference, interact with vendors, and learn about the latest innovations in robotics. A special thank you to Professor Aaron Johnson and his colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute for making this amazing experience possible! 🤖 💡

What better way to kick off our SciTech Spirit Week than by volunteering at the Out of Darkness Walk at FNB Stadium with the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention. Our incredible Interact Club students showed up at 8am to help set up, to volunteer at the activity stations (Photo Booth, temporary tattoos, “I Walk For…” button station, registration, etc.) and to walk in support of su***de prevention. It was such a beautiful day in so many ways, and as always, we are so proud of and impressed with our students and their dedication to make the world a better place. 💙

As many other PPS Schools have done this year, Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy sorted our new students into their houses on September 9th. Students spun our digital wheel and joined either Isibindi, Rêveur, Amistad, or Altruismo. Students received a bandana in their house color so they could immediately begin representing their house (many students have them tied to their backpacks). 🩵

Interact Club had their annual visit to 1 Sound Farm, owned and operated by Farmer Girl Eb. (the parent of a SciTech alum!) Students helped to prepare the ground for the next set of crops and get the farm ready for their annual community pumpkin patch event! Interact Club kicked off the year by volunteering at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank at Langley K-8 school. Students packed up tomatoes and radishes when they first arrived and then passed out produce, meat, milk, and eggs to approximately 250 families. We had 11 students who volunteered with Interact Club for the first time tonight (and are grateful for our 7 returning members for holding it down!) Special shout out to Kanye and Sneha for their energy as they were telling jokes and making distributing cabbage fun! (They certainly brought smiles to the patrons faces!) We are looking forward to a great year of service! 💜

Congratulations to our six World Language Students of Spanish! ✨

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Augustine Hanover, Polina (Aizen) Obedientova, Caiden Russell, Alivia (Alix) Molinaro, Maya (Nick) Watt, and Joshua Chung for earning the Global Seal of Biliteracy, an internationally recognized credential that demonstrates proficiency in two languages.

Their achievement 🏆 reflects their dedication, hard work, and commitment to developing their Spanish language skills. This accomplishment opens doors to future academic and career opportunities and recognizes the valuable gift of bilingualism.

Before welcoming students back for the new school year, SciTech teachers participated in two days of professional learning facilitated by UnboundEd. Together, our educators revisited the GLEAM framework—Grade-Level, Engaging, Affirming, and Meaningful instruction—and explored how these principles can create rigorous and supportive learning experiences for every student.

Teachers focused on helping students engage in productive struggle, providing purposeful scaffolds without reducing academic expectations, and incorporating students’ cultures, identities, experiences, and funds of knowledge into instructional planning.
The thoughtful conversations, collaboration, and commitment demonstrated throughout these sessions reflect our continued dedication to ensuring that every SciTech student feels known, supported, challenged, and empowered to succeed.
