Improving maternal health outcomes for Black women requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the social determinants of health, such as poverty, racism, and lack of access to healthcare. This includes implementing policies that promote equitable access to healthcare, expanding access to high-quality prenatal care and postpartum care, increasing diversity and cultural competence in the healthcare workforce, and addressing systemic racism within healthcare systems.

To that end, SJI is proud to partner with Healthy Start, Inc. Pittsburgh/Allegheny County in bringing the film Birthing Justice to Carlow University for a free screening and panel discussion.

BIRTHING JUSTICE is a feature-length documentary whose purpose is two-fold: to discuss issues fueling the maternal health crisis within the Black community and to advocate for best practices to enhance birthing equity for all, especially Black mothers and birthing people. The film explores this epidemic across the nation, interviewing those affected by current policies, including birthing individuals and healthcare providers, as well as birthing advocates, activists, and policymakers at the forefront of advancing policy change.

We’re so excited to support the Women & Gender Studies department for Women’s History Month. Join WGS on March 21 from 4-5:30 pm in the Gailliot Center for an event with labor activist and author, Daisy Pitkin.

Daisy Pitkin has spent more than twenty years as a community and union organizer, working first in support of garment workers around the world, and then for US labor unions organizing industrial laundry workers. Her essays have been awarded the Montana Prize, the Disquiet Literary Prize, the New Millennium Award, and the Monique Wittig Writer’s Fellowship. She grew up in rural Ohio and holds an MFA from the University of Arizona. Today, Pitkin lives and writes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she works as an organizer with an offshoot of the union UNITE.
