On Saturday May 23rd, nearly 150 members of the Central Catholic/Oakland Catholic Masque community attended the 35th Annual Gene Kelly Awards at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts.
Of the seven group nominations we received for our Spring production of The Addams Family, Central/Oakland Catholic took home FOUR Gene Kelly Awards in Budget Category 2!
-Outstanding Musical
-Outstanding Crew / Technical Ex*****on
-Outstanding Costume Design
-Outstanding Lighting Design
Though an incredible achievement to have made it as finalists in their respective categories, neither Theodor Mertz, '26, nor Vincent Jackson, '27, won for their individual Gene Kelly Award nominations (Outstanding Actor / Outstanding Supporting Actor).
Theodor Mertz, '26, was awarded a $20,000 Gene Kelly Awards Scholarship to Point Park University, where he'll be pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree!
Over the course of the awards ceremony, students from our two schools had their moment(s) to shine on the Benedum Stage:
The Opening Medley featured all individuals nominated as Semi-Finalists for their roles: Theodor Mertz, '26, Vincent Jackson '27, & Adriana Mance (OCHS, '29).
As an Outstanding Musical Nominee, the entire cast had the opportunity to perform "When You're An Addams" to begin Act II of the awards ceremony.
The Outstanding Actor Medley featured Theodor Mertz, '26, singing a solo as Gomez Addams with the other 5 nominated actors.
The Finale Number featured two representatives from each of the 37 participating schools- our schools' participants were: Carys Blough, '27, & Patrick McQuiggan, '28.
Central Catholic has participated in the Gene Kelly Awards for 29 out of the 35 years they’ve existed. Looking back at the records, this is only the 3rd time the school ever won Outstanding Musical, and the first time in 16 years (the only other times were in 2008 and 2010).

Today, we commemorate the anniversary of the canonization of St. John Baptist de La Salle, who was declared a saint by Pope Leo XIII on May 24, 1900.
Recognized for his transformative vision of education and his dedication to young people, St. John Baptist de La Salle founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and helped shape a model of teaching rooted in faith, community, and opportunity for all.
His legacy continues to guide and inspire Central Catholic High School as we carry forward the Lasallian mission each day.

Today, we proudly celebrate a remarkable milestone for one of our own, J. Kevin McElhinny ’43, who turns 100 years old today! 🎉🎈
A proud member of the Central Catholic Class of 1943, Kevin’s story reflects the enduring spirit of faith, perseverance, and lifelong learning that defines our school community. Growing up in Lincoln Place during the Great Depression as the oldest of 10 children, Kevin made two streetcar rides and “a long hike” each day just to attend Central Catholic, an education he cherished deeply throughout his life.
Soon after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and later went on to build a life centered around family, service, and hard work alongside his wife, Letha. This August, they will celebrate 76 years of marriage together. They raised five children and helped build McElhinny Brothers Construction, a family business now in its fourth generation.
Kevin remains a lifelong student with a passion for history, especially the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and World Wars I and II. He has also remained a loyal supporter of Central Catholic and an avid reader of The Quadrangle through the years.
As Central Catholic gets ready to celebrate our own centennial anniversary, we are honored to celebrate Kevin’s 100th birthday.
Happy Birthday, Kevin, and thank you for being such an inspiring member of the Viking family! 💙💛

This evening, Central Catholic High School celebrated the Class of 2026 at St. Paul Cathedral for the annual Baccalaureate Mass.
Surrounded by family, friends, faculty, staff, and the broader Central Catholic community, the Mass served as a reminder to use one's God-given gifts in service to others, and for the greater glory of God.
As our seniors prepare for Commencement on Friday, the Class of 2026 carries a great deal of knowledge and credentials. They also carry a faith formed in community.
