Here are some photos from last week at the Union Approach to Health and Safety class, that took place on August 6th, 2026, in Signal Hill California. This class was led by worker-trainers Dan Umnus, Maggie Gamboa, and Sam Knepper.

Sisters from District 12 - USW local 2801 learned several things including how to structure an effective union health and safety committee, building a business case for health and safety challenges, and developing proposals for those items!

CSB Issues Woodland Pulp Investigation Update

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) released an update on the agency’s ongoing investigation into the January 27, 2026, fatal release of highly toxic hydrogen sulfide gas at the Woodland Pulp mill in Maine. The incident resulted in the deaths of two young employees, a 20-year-old co-op chemical engineering student, and a 26-year-old chemical engineer who had only recently joined the company. The CSB’s investigation update notes that, at Woodland Pulp, there was no system for controlling or accounting for personnel present in the Kraft Mill building during the unit shutdown; there was no system providing ventilation to the Kraft Mill building during either normal operations or shutdowns; and there were no stationary hydrogen sulfide detectors or alarms in the Bleach Plant area of the Kraft Mill. The CSB’s investigation is ongoing as investigators continue to gather facts and analyze several key areas related to the incident.

On July 13-17, members of the United Steelworkers Tony Mazzocchi Center staff and worker-trainers had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response 40-hour training in Akron, Ohio.

This training was a collaboration with fellow National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) grantees, the International Chemical Workers Union Council. ICWUC facilitators led a creative and interactive training which engaged participants and will ultimately help strengthen their skills as HAZWOPER trainers but also lend a hand to the development of a stronger program with the USWTMC. 💪🏽💙💛

Thank you to ICWUC for this educational exchange!
