We were crazy busy with lunar new year lion dancing during February and I’ve been restoring lions all March. I wanted to post a more movement oriented video this time instead of a talking one, but haven’t had a chance to make a decent one. However I do have some short videos I’ve done over the last, like during the shutdown, which I’ve never posted here so I hope some of these will be useful to done people.

This video to help help people get started on handstands. Handstands are seen commonly in capoeira but are useful in establishing a solid tumbling foundation for skills found in other martial arts as well, such as an aú (cartwheel) or handspring. This technique emphasizes body alignment to help get a kind of “root” through the hands. Be careful not to lock the elbows so your weight can sink through the arms and hands in to the ground and plant you solidly in the ground. In a way, it will kind of feel like you are diving into a tall glass of water in terms of direction; your body will follow your arms and your legs will follow your body. Carefully not to slam hard into the floor since that can throw you off.

It took me forever to put something up because some of my kf brothers were saying they were looking forward to my post and I thought I needed to put something up really profound but I couldn’t think what and it’s been a while and lion dance season is coming up. And really, hydration is important.

I am naming this series after my friend Saif Kaku, who it seems was murdered by Daesh (aka isis). He was a super cool guy living in Iraq who just wanted to take care of his mom, become an engineer and learn kung fu. I won’t forget you, my friend. You can search or this entire series by looking for

A seminar on Chen Jin Ba Gu Shi San Shi, the 13 Posture Bone and Tendon Stretching Form, will be this Sunday, 11 January from 11:30-2pm at Steel Dragon. This form is good for strengthening your fundamentals and should be a nice way to start the year off.

This form can be fairly intense physically and challenges leg strength as well as enhancing flexibility and root, and is good for enhancing your basic kung fu, which should underlie whatever style you do. Note that while it starts out fairly easy, it can be a little physically challenging, so despite its name it is a bit of a workout and you will want to dress in comfortable clothes same like any other kung fu class.

The class is open to both Steel Dragon students and others, so feel free to invite your friends. The cost is $30 for current students and $45 for others.

Steel Dragon will not train employees of ICE and DHS, nor perform any services for them. Over the past 6 months agents for ICE and the department of homeland security have acted more like criminal gangs than law enforcement agencies, terrorizing populations across the nation. They operate with cowardice, concealing their identities while overwhelming and abducting unarmed, defenseless individuals in unmarked cars, including women and children, while carrying guns and wearing flack jackets. At the same time, they flout the law by failing to show badges or warrants and by denying due process of the law. This is more reminiscent of the Gestapo, Proud Boys or TdA than legitimate law enforcement, and they are never held accountable for their numerous violations of the law or mistaken arrests.

Real police we see every day in our cities, on the other hand, deal with far, far more dangerous situations everyday across America and by and large comply with the law, acquiring and showing warrants, badges visible and not hiding behind masks. I could go on but this is sufficient.

These agencies clearly operate in a manner inconsistent with martial morality and ethics and they demonstrate by the very fact of their actions that they cannot be trusted. They are the antithesis of good character. Therefore, Steel Dragon will not train or provide services to these agencies or the individuals in these agencies, nor will our students.

All that said, i am not trying to make like this little school is a big deal in itself. I would be surprised if they wanted anything from us or were even aware of our existence. So I don’t want to give the impression that we have an outsized image of ourselves. However, we hope this will help fulfill our ethical obligation as a martial arts school and that it may inspire other schools who believe in maintaining good character and martial ethics to adopt a similar position. And perhaps businesses outside of the martial arts field will feel so inspired as well.

We will be posting major content exclusively on blue sky going forward. We will continue to post schedule changes and occasional other posts but for now until the foreseeable future, blue sky will be the best platform to follow us on.
