Local leagues have held public panel discussions and other events regarding Marcellus Shale. In Spring 2011.

The Straight Scoop on Shale Drilling is a nonpartisan public issues education/engagement project designed to educate and engage the public regarding natural gas extraction from Marcellus Shale. The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania Citizens Education Fund completed study guides on the process of natural gas extraction, its economic impact, its environmental impact, and its regulation, permitt

ing and related legislation. the League of Women Voters Citizen Education Fund applied for, and received, a grant from the Colcom Foundation, to expand its work educating and engaging the public through providing public education events/forums and disseminating resources in a variety of venues, and using many different forms of media including social media.

A panel discussion will explore what the science means for policy. Justin Nobel, journalist for Rolling Stone, is the lunch speaker, talking about his experiences investigating radioactivity.
