In a Berlin lab in 1913, Maud Menten peers through a simple microscope and watches an enzyme reaction. She discovers something in conjunction with German biochemist Leonor Michaelis that forms the basis for the modern pharmaceutical industry.

They create a mathematical equation that, more than a century later, remains crucial to understanding how enzymes, and thereby drug interactions, work.
