Doctoral student Crystal Zang has won an Honorable Mention from the Mental Health Statistics Section for JSM for her dissertation paper "Supervised and covariate adjusted principal coordinates analysis for visualization and prediction using microbiome data." Crystal will present this work in the section's topic contributed session for awardees at JSM this summer. Congratulations, Crystal!

Please join us today, February 4th, for a seminar presentation by Dr. Katie Suda from the School of Medicine as she gives a talk titled, "The Strength of the Chain is in its Weakest Link: Drug Shortages".

Congratulations to our PhD student Sarah Wang, advised by Dr. George Tseng, on receiving a Student Paper Award from the ASA Section on Statistical Computing and Statistical Graphics!

Award recipients will present their work at JSM 2026 and will be recognized at the Computing and Graphics Mixer.

Dr. Wei Chen’s team has been awarded the inaugural ENAR Team Science Award for their outstanding integration of advanced biostatistics and machine learning with clinical and biomedical expertise. We are proud to recognize our own secondary faculty member, Dr. Wei Chen, for their central role in this achievement, along with Dr. Molin Yue, a recent graduate of our PhD program now working at Eli Lilly.

Congratulations to two outstanding students in our department! MS student Xin Li has been awarded the William T. Green, Jr. Award in Public Health Studies for her research on emerging risk factors and their temporal patterns in hospitalized COPD patients. PhD student Haoling Wang received an Honorable Mention in the 2026 ASA Section on Risk Analysis Student Paper Competition and will present his work on neural networks for interval-censored data at JSM. Both students are advised by Dr. Ying Ding, professor and associate dean for graduate academic affairs. We're proud of their achievements!
