You have heard it and probably lived it, maybe even before the pandemic. Burnout is a real issue in healthcare, but what are some things that we can do to address it? And are we treating the symptoms versus asking about the underlying root cause, our environment? β£
β£
Listen to this OT Digest podcast episode where I give a snapshot of some studies out there right now that are showing promising results for preventing and healing burnout in addition to some calls to action for both healthcare professionals and healthcare organizations. β£

For all of those that are struggling with this, Iβm so sorry. It can be really challenging and Iβm not going to say that this podcast is the solution. I hope itβs a start to a very important conversation.

With so many courses out there, how do you know which ones are actually worth your time and money?
Iβve been there β certificates stuffed in folders, scrambling before license renewal. So I put together a guide with everything I wish I had known: how to find credible courses, track your hours, AND make sure the knowledge actually sticks in your practice.

You find a research article, now what?
How do we make that jump for getting the information and putting it into clinical practice? This is not a simple process but the key takeaways for doing this include
β
Make sure the article is legit
π Read through the methods section to get the specifics
π§ Imagine doing the intervention with your client
π§ Identify any barriers (this is where you can reach out to the author)
π Track how its going
π Try something new if it's not working

Now, more than ever, this blog post feels important to share again. It can feel overwhelming to try to dive into analyzing an article or research, but this skill is really critical.
As healthcare providers, it's essential to ensure we are familiar with the research and can effectively share it in a clear and unbiased manner, providing our clients with the most effective care.
Why it is so important to know if a research study is legit β OT Graphically
It can change the way you use the information Without taking a critical view of an article, I have fallen into the trap of taking the authorβs word for it by just reading the discussion, which can be dangerous. Why? If you read the discussion and takeaways and the authors report positive resul

New Infographic: The Evidence-Based Benefits of Babywearing πΆπ»
Wearing my baby has been one of the most unexpectedly beautiful parts of motherhood. π But without the right support and resources I probably would have thrown in the towel early on.
I decided to check out the research to see what were the evidence-based impacts behind it. I learned babywearing actually helps with bonding, reduces crying, supports their hip development, improves feeding and so much more which made sense from my experience. Oh also and it said there was some back pain too- that one was accurate as well!
I think OTs could find themselves being able to educate about this topic in a variety of settings so I wanted to make an infographic about it. I also took some time to share my personal story in a blog post.

This topic is pretty personal for me. When my son struggled with feeding challenges, we tried a lot of different things. I was told at first he did have a tongue tie/lip tie that was impacting his feeding and then I was told that he did not. It was all very confusing during a time where I was sleep deprived and not really sure how to move forward. I just dreaded each feeding knowing it would be very dramatic, leading to a lot of spit up and discomfort for both of us.
I wish I had created this infographic before my first kid, but itβs never to late and research is updating constantly. A lot of the research in this infographic had similar results across a lot of studies. Iβve heard a lot of clinical opinions that people are doing this too often or that it is not done enough. If this is confusing as clinicians, imagine how confusing it is for caregivers.
The impact of knowing the signs of potential tongue or lip tie is huge for families that are struggling with breastfeeding. The earlier to identify it, the better for everyone involved. There is also a lot of information out in the public about doing body work pre/post ties, personally this was somewhat helpful for us but it wasnβt until the actual tongue release that I noticed any differences. I have not looked into any studies about this yet but plan to in the future.
I hope you can use this information to share with your families why you may be requesting to get an assessment for a tongue/lip to, or to share with dentists or health professionals why this may be a recommendation you have as an occupational therapist.

Iβm curious what your experience has been with infants pre or post tongue tie and if you found this infographic helpful.
