This past weekend, the older students of my studio participated in a studio class- meaning they perform newly-learned pieces and offer each other feedback about elements that are and aren't working. Students get experience playing in front of other people, they learn how to listen critically, and they are provided the support of their peers.

One of the lessons we learn as musicians is being able to make an error in a performance and move on as if nothing has happened. What's most important is that the performer doesn't drop their character, because performances are never perfect, but the lasting impression should be an emotionally moving one. Well one of the students was extremely candid about her errors both while she was performing and after she finished. I explained that she needs to act like nothing was wrong, to which she replied "well how can I act like nothing is wrong when everyone else played so perfectly?!" I turned to the rest of the class and asked "who played perfectly?"-no hands raised- "who made mistakes?" -everyone's hands shot in the air.

We proceeded to have a vibrant conversation about dealing with nerves, the Sisyphusean craft that is creating beautiful music, and yet the solace and delight making music gives us. Of course, students need to learn good practice techniques, how to stay committed through difficulties, and gain facility on their instrument. But it's also important to have these kinds of discussions at a young age so we always remember the joy of practice and that everyone studying music, or any difficult craft for that matter, is in the same boat as us!
