For international student Pedro Bortolotti from Brazil, the path to earning a bachelor’s degree in the United States has been a journey of growth, opportunity, and community.

Pedro, now a Finance major at Pittsburg State University, began his academic journey in the U.S. at Crowder College. After building a strong academic foundation there, he transferred to Pittsburg State University last fall to continue pursuing his educational and professional goals.

The transition from a community college to a four-year university can be a big step, but Pedro says his experience at Pitt State has made the move both smooth and rewarding.

“For me, moving from a community college to Pittsburg State University has been an amazing experience,” he said. “I had a solid academic foundation from my time at a community college, which also helped me get ready for the move to a university. I've had the chance to get involved on campus, meet incredible professors, and keep pursuing my academic and professional objectives at Pitt State. The community and support here have made the changeover very easy.”

Students like Pedro highlight the opportunities available for international students who begin their studies at community colleges before transferring to a university to complete their bachelor’s degree.

To help guide students interested in taking that next step, Pittsburg State University will host a special virtual advising session for international students currently attending community colleges in the United States. The session will provide information about transfer opportunities, the admission process, scholarships, and academic programs available at Pitt State.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday, April 1, at 6 p.m. (CDT).

On November 11, the skies above Pittsburg, Kansas, delivered a rare and breathtaking surprise: the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis. Typically visible only in far northern regions, this vivid natural phenomenon occasionally dips farther south during periods of strong solar activity—but witnessing it in southeast Kansas is an uncommon treat.

Among those who experienced the colorful display were exchange students Luiza Bebber and João Rigo from Universidade de Caxias do Sul in Brazil, currently studying at Pittsburg State University. For both, the appearance of the aurora was nothing short of extraordinary.

“Seeing the Northern Lights in the U.S. was an unforgettable and surreal experience, especially because we don’t have this kind of phenomenon in Brazil,” Luiza shared.

Many international students rushed outside to watch the sky transform into brilliant shades of red, pink, green, and blue, capturing photos and videos on their phones to preserve what, for some, may truly be a once-in-a-lifetime memory.

Dr. Alessandro Martins, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Pittsburg State University, continues to make a meaningful impact on student learning through his commitment to hands-on scientific training. This semester, he worked closely with his graduate student, Gabriel Tenório, an international student from Brazil studying Polymer Chemistry, guiding him in the proper use of advanced laboratory equipment.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Martins shared, “I was able to train Gabriel to use this sophisticated equipment properly. Seeing his excitement as he observed polymer synthesis results reminded me why hands-on training with advanced instruments is crucial.”

For Dr. Martins, access to tools such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is essential for developing both strong research and confident young scientists. “Providing students with opportunities to operate equipment like NMR and others not only advances their research but also prepares them for successful careers,” he noted. “Knowledge dissemination and the responsible use of instruments are the foundation of good science and student development.”

Through his dedication to mentoring and hands-on instruction, Dr. Martins is helping shape the next generation of chemists—ensuring they gain not only theoretical knowledge, but also the practical experience needed to excel in the field.

Valquíria Vita, a Pittsburg State University alumna from Brazil, will be honored with the prestigious Gorillas of the Last Decade (GOLD) Alumni Award during a reception hosted by the Alumni Association on Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Wilkinson Alumni Center. The event is open to the campus and community as part of PSU’s Homecoming festivities.

Vita (MA ’15, Communication) is the Founder and Director of LEGACY Life Stories, a company in Brazil that specializes in writing biographies for people 80 years of age and older. Since its creation, the company has published more than 50 books and provides employment for 10 people.

Her journey with Pitt State began in 2012 as an exchange student. She returned in 2014 to pursue her master’s in communication, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA in 2015. While at PSU, she earned recognition on the Dean’s Scholastic Honors list, as well as the Global Leadership Certificate and International Knowledge and Experience Certificate. She was named International Graduate Student of the Year and earned 10 awards at the Kansas Collegiate Media Convention through her work as a reporter and managing editor for The Collegio.

Vita also launched People of Pittsburg, a column highlighting the lives of local residents, which later inspired her to create LEGACY Life Stories. Today, she is a sought-after author, preserving personal histories and creating jobs in her community.

She continues to represent Pitt State abroad by sharing her study abroad experiences in lectures and at conferences.

“I am very happy to receive this award, which I dedicate to all those who have been international students in the U.S. like me,” Vita said.
