Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! Today is a day to remember and celebrate America's native people, land, and animals. Many Indigenous tribes refer to North America as Turtle Island. This comes from a creation story that says all life and land are on the back of a giant turtle, symbolizing a close connection between humans and nature.
Kansas has many native turtles, including the Ornate Box Turtle, the Three-Toed Box Turtle, and the Common Musk Turtle, all of which we have at Nature Reach! Pictured above is our Ornate Box Turtle, Kansas's official state reptile. We at Nature Reach believe in supporting the state's native animals and ecosystems so that they can be sustained for generations to come.
