Pitt State Alumnus Earns Prestigious Houston Production Award 🏆🎬

From Ecuador to Pitt State and the Houston media industry, alumnus Marcelo Salazar continues to make his mark in media production.

Marcelo was recently named Best Commercial/Corporate Producer by the Houston Association of Producers at the HAPIE Awards Gala. His company, CRIM Media, produced the award-winning commercial.

Marcelo graduated from Pittsburg State University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, specializing in Media Production. Today, he is a successful producer and part of an award-winning independent media production company based in Houston.

Taking Graduate Research Beyond the Classroom 🧪🌎

Pitt State graduate student Yeasin Arafat recently had the opportunity to present his research at the ACS Fall 2026 Meeting in Chicago, connecting with scientists from around the world and learning about the latest developments in chemistry and polymer science.

Yeasin is pursuing his M.S. in Polymer Chemistry, with a focus on biobased and sustainable polymers, and serves as a Graduate Research Assistant at Pitt State.

He attended the conference alongside Dr. Ram K. Gupta, Professor and Vice President of the Tyler Research Center at NIMA; Dr. Chandan Bodhak, Research Scientist at NIMA; and Dr. Senthil Cherayan, Research Scientist at NIMA.

For Yeasin, the experience was an important milestone in his graduate research journey, an opportunity to present his work, build professional connections, and experience the global scientific community firsthand.

From Paraguay to Pitt State, and Making an Impact Through Music 🎻🇵🇾

Congratulations to Pittsburg State University alumna Irene Diaz Gill on being selected as a recipient of the Certified Rising Star Award!

Originally from Paraguay, Irene earned her Music Performance degree from Pitt State and has continued building an impressive career as a cellist, music educator, and orchestra director.

Today, Irene serves as Orchestra Director for Pittsburg Community Middle School and Pittsburg High School, where her talent, compassion, and dedication to her students have made a lasting impact. Her musical journey has also taken her to stages in both Paraguay and the United States, performing as a soloist and with several orchestras.

Her recognition as a Certified Rising Star celebrates the difference she is making through music and education, and we are proud that Pitt State was part of her academic journey.

From Paraguay to Pittsburg, Kansas, a Pitt State education can be the beginning of opportunities that reach far beyond the classroom.

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER GRADUATION? 🎓

From International Student to Pitt State Alumnus and Now Giving Back

Akash Verma came to Pittsburg State University from India to study Automotive Technology. He graduated in 2022 but his connection to Pitt State didn’t end there.

Today, Akash is giving back to the place that helped launch his career by donating a 2017 Mercedes-Benz B250e electric vehicle to Pitt State’s Automotive Technology program.

And this isn’t just any EV.

The vehicle was manufactured by Mercedes Benz but features a Tesla supplied electric drivetrain, the result of a collaboration between the two companies that lasted only a few model years. That makes this vehicle an uncommon and valuable hands-on learning opportunity for Pitt State students studying electric vehicle technology.

Since graduating, Akash has continued working with the vehicle himself and gaining firsthand experience with its systems and technology. Now, he wants the next generation of students to have that same opportunity to learn by doing.

At Pitt State, the impact of an international student can continue long after graduation. Akash’s journey is a great example of how our alumni stay connected, give back, and help create new learning opportunities for the Gorillas who come after them.
