Pittsburg USD 250 Foundation

We financially support educational opportunities for students through scholarships, teacher grants, and special projects.

The USD 250 Foundation is a privately funded organization that helps develop top notch facilities for the district, promotes innovative approaches to teaching at all levels and provides scholarships for post graduate education for Pittsburg High School seniors. Since 2007 over $157,000 have been awarded in teacher grants to fund educational projects. Some examples include: Crash Car physics, PHS c

limbing wall, field trips for ESOL students, Percussion Instruments, Ultimate Scooters for PE, Multigenerational Chorus and camera equipment for the PHS Yearbook staff. Awarding student scholarships for post secondary education has long been a part of PHS history, dating back to the 1960s Alumni Association scholarships. The USD 250 Foundation has expanded the giving process and since 2000 has awarded over $446,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors. We welcome you to support Pittsburg Community Schools through your gifts! Gifts to the foundation may be given in various forms of cash, properties, securities, or other tangible items. Proceeds from life insurance policies may also be directed toward the fund. Contributions are tax-deductible as a 501 (c)(3) gift. Gifts are normally undesignated or the donor may specify the projects or use for which the gift is intended. Gifts may be designated for use of the principal or in the case of an endowment, limited to the use of earnings only. Become a part of tomorrow's future, today. Five deserving Dragon graduates — Elizabeth Carper, Noah Hodge, Michelle Lucas, Kalin Manuel, and Lacey Strode — are the recipients of a scholarship funded by Bess Spiva Timmons, a generous community member whose legacy lives on.

All five say they are pursuing a higher education for the positive impact it will make on their lives and on the lives of others.

Lacey will attend Lesley University to get a degree in art therapy.

Kalin will attend Pitt State to pursue an education in business, HR, and construction safety.

Michelle will attend KU to study law, English, or psychology.

Noah will attend Pitt State to major in education.

Elizabeth will attend Pitt State to major in pre-dentistry or healthcare.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Friends of Pittsburg High School Performing Arts Scholarship: Allie Allison (Performance) and Anna Ozbun (Tech), both active throughout high school in numerous productions.

Allie plans to attend Pitt State and pursue a career in interior design with a focus on historical preservation, combining passions for art, history, and creativity. The goal? To own a design business, restoring historic spaces while making a lasting impact for future generations.

Anna plans to attend Kansas State University to pursue a career in technical theater with a speciality in stage management and a minor in creative writing. Her dream? To write a Broadway play!

The Joan E. and Steven Lewis Memorial Scholarship will make a difference to two deserving Dragons heading to Pitt State this fall.

Joan E. (Sullivan) Lewis (Class of 1958) was a longtime teacher at Pittsburg and Frontenac schools. After the death of her first husband, she married Steve Lewis (Class of 1957).

Her sons, Brian and Bill, also Dragons, established a memorial scholarship in their names.

This year's recipients are De’Marus Partee and Kya Galindo. De’Marus wants to impact lives through education and will major in wildlife biology, while Kya dreams of serving others and will pursue a degree in nursing.

Mason Deringer and Parker Pinamonti are this year’s recipients of the Coach Larry Garman Legacy Scholarship, awarded to students who played football at least two years for the Dragons and who plan to attend Pitt State.

Coach Garman was head football coach for the Dragons from 1965 to 1999, amassing a record of 255-84-5.

Mason, who was a strong safety and slotback for the Dragons, plans to study communication and education. Parker, a team captain for the Dragons, plans to pursue a degree in construction management and will play for the Gorillas as a defensive end.

We are saddened by the passing of Dr. Bert Patrick, a champion of higher education.

Through the Patrick Family Scholarship, Dr. Patrick helped Dragon graduates continue their educational journeys and transform their futures. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

Reminder: coming up Saturday, Aug. 8!

This event, coordinated by Leroy Smith, supports the Brandon Leroy Smith Leadership Award, a scholarship Leroy established in memory of his son, a PHS graduate who died in 2016.

Presented each year to PHS seniors through the USD 250 Foundation, it has helped more than 20 students pursue a college education!

Two graduates will begin their college journeys this fall with support from the Roy Davis Memorial Scholarship: Norlan Aguilar and Amanuel Harrigan.

Roy Davis (Class of 1957) faced financial barriers that prevented him from completing college; he created this scholarship to help students pursue their academic goals.

Norlan has distinguished himself as an athlete, performer, and ESOL translator. This fall, he will attend Pittsburg State University to study criminal justice so he can serve his community.

Amanuel plans to attend Pittsburg State University, where he will study either engineering or accounting. A dedicated student, he is passionate about academics and excited to continue his education.

Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Webb Family Scholarship! These students were active in athletics, the arts, academics, and community service.

Malakai Meadows - Benedictine College / Healthcare or Sports Medicine

Maren Stumo - KU / Business or Healthcare

Dick and Kaye Lynn Webb both graduated from PHS in 1956 and founded Watco Companies, which has since grown to employ 5,000 team members. The Webb Family, represented at the scholarship ceremony by Susie Lundy, is committed to supporting the education of Pittsburg students so that they may achieve their goals.

Christian Patrick is the recipient of this year’s Steve Ward Community Service Memorial Scholarship, established in honor of a member of the Class of 1965, the father of two Dragons, and a longtime local businessman.

In addition to being active in several sports, throughout high school Christian was involved in Key Club and Get Busy Livin’ Club, was a member of Student Council, and was active in his church and PHS Launch.

“Being involved helped me learn about community service and what it is like to give back,” he said.

Noah Hodge is this year’s recipient of the Babs and Susie Tims Scholarship, started by sisters who dedicated their entire careers to teaching at Lakeside Elementary after earning their degrees from Pittsburg State University.

Noah, who graduated with a 3.95 GPA and was active in extracurriculars, plans to attend Pitt State this fall to major in elementary education. Just like Babs and Susie, he has a passion for helping others and believes he can make the greatest impact in the classroom.
