We have enjoyed the time spent with Guilherme in the Department of Chemistry. He is very personable and a very good chemist. We wish him well in his Ph.D. studies.

Guilherme Augusto Moraes de Jesus, of Brazil, arrived at Pittsburg State University in February as a visiting research scholar. His time at Pitt State will come to an end later this month as he prepares to return to Brazil and continue his Ph.D. studies at Universidade Estadual de Maringá.

Guilherme’s research focuses on the surface modification of titanium and other biomaterials for biomedical applications. During his time at Pitt State, he expanded his research experience while working with new techniques, equipment and approaches that will support his future work. His PSU faculty mentor is Dr. Alessandro Martins.

His visit was made possible through scholarship funding from Brazil’s Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Brazilian Federal Foundation for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES).

Reflecting on his experience, Guilherme said, “My time at PSU has been a great experience, both professionally and personally. When I arrived here, my English was definitely a challenge, sometimes I knew what I wanted to say, but my words didn’t always cooperate! But day by day, talking with people and being part of the university community helped me improve a lot.”

Beyond his academic work, Guilherme said his time at Pitt State provided opportunities to experience a new culture, meet new people and grow personally.

“When I return to Brazil, I will continue my Ph.D. and apply the knowledge and experience I gained at PSU to my research,” he said. “I am very grateful for this opportunity and for everyone at PSU who made my time here so special.”

As he prepares to return home, Guilherme leaves Pitt State with new research skills, lasting memories and a deeper connection to the university community.
