Written by Robert H Grant in 1833. Born in India, he was a member of parliament and also governor of Bombay. He took the text from Psalms 104. He was knighted in 1834. A beautiful song that can be sung year round and especially during Christmas as we celebrate the birth of The King.

Written by William Chatterton Dix in 1865. Dix worked as an insurance salesman but was struck by a critical diseas, while recovering he wrote this beautiful song. Originally a poem from which Dix took the words “The Manger Throne” which had the original 3 verses. The words used was taken from Isaiah 9:6. Dix was instrumental in writing and compiling several hymn books.

Anonymously written in 1833. This beautiful old Christmas hymn was taken from Luke 2. I want to encourage each of you to read Luke 2 this Christmas and enjoy the story of The King of Israel being born in a manger because there was no room for him in the inn.

Written in 1857 by John H. Hopkins. He was born in 1812 and had 12 siblings. His parents came from Dublin and Hamburg and settled in Pittsburgh PA. His dad had many skills and was second Bishop of the Episcopal Church. John also like his dad had many talented skill. From hymn writing, stained glass maker, designer, writer poet, controversialist, teacher preacher, just to name a few and also preach the funeral of Ulysses S. Grant in 1885. And wrote a book on the biography of his father.

A Latin song from the 12th. Century however it comes from a poem that dates back to the 8th century. In 1851 J.M. Neale translated it to English. Jesus was born of a virgin, overcame sin, died on the cross, rose again. and by Grace gives us victory over death and hell.

Originally written by John Wade around 1743. It was written in Latin with the name “ADESTE FIDELES”. However in William Mercer wrote verse 2 in the 1800 after Fredrick Oakley translated it into English. A much loved Christmas hymn that is sung every year.

Written by Phillips Brooks in 1868. Born in 1835 in Boston, Brooks would graduate from Harvard in 1855, he then was ordained in 1859 in the Church of advent in Philadelphia and also the Trinity Church in Boston before becoming Bishop of Mass in 1891. Having gone through the Civil War and also Lincoln’s Death he travelled to Bethlehem and his experience there helped him to write this much loved Christmas hymn. This beautiful song was written for his Sunday School class. Brooks died in Boston in 1893.

Written by Edmund H. Sears in 1849 in Boston Massachusetts. He had pastors the Unitarian Church in Wayland Massachusetts for a while before moving on to pastor a larger church. This was a time of war, Sears had a nervous breakdown and returned to the Wayland Church as an associate pastor, this is when he was asked to write these words for a poem by a friend and pastor William Lunt for his Sunday School. It was a year later that the poem was put the tune of a hymn. Still one f the most popular Christmas hymns today.
