Indiana Beekeeping School

Indiana Beekeeping School the most comprehensive class offered in Indiana, our Beginners Beekeeping Course and started nearly 25 years ago.

classes were halted for covid-19, and more recently because of the health of the principals. Since its inception a decade ago, the Indiana Beekeeping School has made more than a thousand educated beekeepers, most of whom have successfully kept bees since their class. Many have turned into honeybee spokespeople who give talks at schools and clubs and meetings, cutting through the Internet noise of

bogus causes of the bee crisis and educating people on the latest scientific studies and findings. The school itself is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt educational foundation, and has been a financial supporter of ongoing research into the honeybee crisis.

Of my four beehives, one was queenless, with a lot of drones in it. It's been a long time since I've seen this situation, actually in one of Larry's hives. I put in three frames with eggs and larvae and I'll check on them in another week.

I have sad news to share. Fellow beekeeper Lynn Bierlein passed away earlier this week. Besides being a beekeeper, Lynn was best at sharing what he had learned and became an educator and proponent of best beekeeping practices.

Part of the assembled team from Miranda Vondersaar tree service. A tree came down on an old house past Bainbridge in June. The tough historic old house needs a lot of roof work, and Vondersaar was called in to carefully extracate the downed tree. They noticed an active hive that had survived the fall and had the section carefully lowered to the ground, and they called me in for consultation. With a fair bit more trimming to lighten the load the stump/log will be raised up and delivered to our all natural apiary this evening.

We worked with vondersaar several times, and besides being expert tree people, even in extreme cases like this, they also care about the bees. They're called to me with pictures was about whether the colony could be saved, and they've done this before, which is why I recommend them highly!

We are at the farmers market until 7:30 tonight, and in spite of some distant thunder rumblings we have not had any rain. I have one and a half dozen eggs left, and I've got honey honey sticks plus Ann Kelly is with me, and she has some excellent crochet work and special bonus freshly harvested catnip

I know at least a couple of interested apprentices have been waiting. Tomorrow we will go into the beehives and do a full inspection. You'll need your own gear (veil, gloves). Appropriate dress. 10:30 at the farm.

A quick look at my hives, at least some made it thru the winter. Any newbys or newer than newbys who would like to visit, help out, learn a bit as we pull hives apart for their first post-winter inspection, clear the dead hives, and likely create some walkaway splits.
