Update: There is no false information in this meme. If you are seeing it as blacked out, it’s because some far-right wacko reported it for the word “equity”. 😡

There's a double standard when it comes to childhood sleep versus adult sleep.

We expect kids to sleep through the night uninterrupted. Or rather, without interrupting us.

Adults don't hold themselves to the same standard. We frequently wake to use the restroom, when a storm or a disturbing noise suddenly awakens us, when we're hungry, or just from a bad dream.

It is biologically normal for children to wake frequently, but our society is obsessed with making children sleep without waking up for anything, even things they need.

What if we hold our expectations for childhood sleep loosely while also ensuring children have what they need to get restful sleep as much as possible?

What if we made sure they get more time outside and less screen time? What if we made sure they eat food that fills them with vitamins and minerals rather than empty calories? What if we spend one-on-one time connecting with them?

Give them the tools to get restful and don't be upset when they still wake up. One day they won't come to get us anymore, needing the comfort only we can provide.

One day they WILL sleep. But let's soothe them until they do.

Always adjust your child’s diet first💛

I was desperate for answers for my son with ADHD when Liana offered an Advanced Children’s Health Elective for HMI graduates. While I knew sugar, dairy and wheat aren’t good for anyone, I didn’t realize how big of an impact they were having on my son’s brain and his behavior until we tried the elimination diet recommended in this HMI class.

Within 2 weeks he seemed like a different child! He was calm and able to focus and respond. My other children were also amazed at the changes in their brother and said we need to keep doing this special eating plan! While this is only the first step in HMI’s ADHD protocol, it was significant!

From HMI Elective: “These foods are almost always found in formula and baby food so these allergies are happening at very young ages. Food allergies can produce a neurological reaction in your child’s brain. It’s very common for these kids to have multiple food sensitivities. It’s usually not just one, so if they have a reaction to wheat, it’s likely they will have a reaction to dairy or sugar too.

A lot of these reactions in kids are labeled by doctors as emotionally related or learning disability related, ADHD, or neurotic. They can call it any number of things, but food allergies are related to this whole picture of learning disorders and insufficient nutrients in the brain.

Standard psychiatry doesn’t have any baseline for this, they don’t have anything in their repertoire that food allergies are a cause of learning disorders. They can prescribe medicines because they are medical doctors. That’s why when a child who exhibits these behaviors goes to a doctor, they will be prescribed medication because they don’t understand that allergies are a cause.

Almost all kids in case studies that have been treated by removing these foods have had huge improvements or even reversals even in certain ends of the spectrum with autism and with ADHD. Nutritional based therapy has a very effective history of correcting a lot of these problems. Parents have great turn around when they implement these changes with their kids.”

If you have a child whose brain needs a little extra love, try taking all of these foods out 100% for a minimum of two weeks. Then reintroduce one food at a time every two weeks so you can see for yourself how your child responds to each one. 💜 ~ Cahira, HMI Admissions Director

“Parenting has nothing to do with perfection. Perfection isn’t even the goal, not for us, not for our children. Learning together to live well in an imperfect world, loving each other despite or even because of our imperfections, and growing as humans while we grow our little humans, those are the goals of gentle parenting. So don’t ask yourself at the end of the day if you did everything right. Ask yourself what you learned and how well you loved, then grow from your answer. That is perfect parenting.”
