Wake County Extension and Wake County Public School System have developed a
new program for middle school students and we need to find FOUR Food
Security Site Coordinators to help us help students make an impact on food
security right here in Wake County!
Through the *Growing Youth Food Security Leaders Program*, Wake County
middle schoolers will have the chance to learn about food security
challenges in their community and will be given $2,000 to implement a
project that tackles food insecurity in their school. This summer, the
students learn about the issues and develop their project, and then they
implement the project during the Fall and Spring of the 2016-2017 school
year. There will be one field trip to a community site or agency per week.
The* Food Security Site Coordinator* is a paid position ($18/hr for
approximately 30 hours per week) working with a group of 20 middle school
students for four weeks this summer. Training is July 1 - 7. Program weeks
are July 11-14, July 18-21, July 25-28 and August 1-4. There may be the
opportunity for continued work in the Fall and Spring with fewer hours per
week.
*Program sites run Monday - Thursday from 9AM to 2PM.* Site coordinators
should expect to arrive on site 30 minutes before the program starts each
day and should expect to stay 30 minutes after the program ends. 30 hours
per week with some work being able to be done remotely on Fridays for
reporting/planning/contacting parents.
The four sites for the program this summer are: E Millbrook Middle, Dillard
Drive Middle, Wendell Middle and Fuquay-Varina Middle.
Background checks and photo ID will be required for employment. Site
coordinators will not be responsible for driving youth, as WCPSS is
providing transportation for field trips.
Anyone interested in the positions should send cover letter and resume
to Heather Schaffer by June 13. Site coordinators may specify a preference
for a particular site in their cover letter if they would like to work at
any particular site or can state that they would be willing to work at any

Call to action!
Dear Laura,
While some of us finalizing our Memorial Day plans, House Bill 332, the repeal bill that is moving swiftly through our legislature could kill renewable portfolio standards in NC.
Please take a moment to consider what this means.
Hanna Mitchell of Greenpeace warns:
"If passed, the bill would freeze the amount of energy that Duke Energy is required to produce from renewable sources and energy efficiency at 6% and change the rate rules for small solar farms. In sum, it would undo some of the key policies that have allowed the solar energy industry to grow in NC."
What about the people of North Carolina?
The health costs of fossil fuel dependence are not too high for us to bear. We deserve better a course than what fossil fuels, including coal and natural gas can deliver. Both contribute to climate change related health illnesses such as heat stroke, dehydration, infectious disease and allergies. Too many of us are already struggling to breathe. In our state alone, over 900,000 adults and 300,000 children have been diagnosed with asthma according to the American Lung Association's State of the Air Report. About 40% of our state's air pollution is coming from power plants that run on fossil fuels. With more of that we can expect more respiratory illness, heart disease, cancer, prenatal complications and premature death in North Carolina's future.
Our children are already suffering from the effects of climate change and will continue to suffer until we transition to a clean energy economy.
I am sharing an action alert from the NC Sustainable Energy Association, so please take a minute to make a few calls in support of solar. Please educate senators representing your area as well. Find your NC representative: http://www.ncleg.net/representation/WhoRepresentsMe.aspx
URGENT ACTION ALERT: Contact Senators to Oppose Changes to Clean Energy Policies
