For the fifth-straight year, the Research & Development Council of NJ has honored two Rutgers University research teams with Edison Patent Awards, New Jersey’s highest recognition for inventors and innovation!

Rutgers University School of Engineering team of professors Thomas Nosker, Jennifer Lynch-Branzoi, and Richard Lehman earned the Industrial Processes award for structural plastic lumber, a material made of recycled plastics that is strong enough to support 120-ton trains. Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Distinguished Professor Ximing Guo received the Aquaculture award for the oyster varieties he and his team developed that feature improved disease resistance, growth, and diversity, and produce uniform, faster-growing, healthier, and tastier oysters.

The Office for Research has supported both research teams through its Technology Transfer unit (Innovate Rutgers), including nominating them for the 2026 Edison Patent Awards.

Plant-based diet 🤝 Omnivore diet

In a study coauthored by Rutgers Director of Behavioral Nutrition Peggy Policastro, researchers found no statistically significant differences in how far recreational runners ran or how much weight resistance trainers lifted after four weeks on each diet.

Our own senior vice president for research Michael Zwick and assistant vice president of Research Regulatory Affairs Hila Berger served as judges alongside Bergen Community College STEM Research Center director Chris Tully at the BCC annual STEM C² Conference, an event that promotes the intellectual and investigative development of students, faculty, and staff in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields.

The STEM C² Conference fosters strong collaboration among community colleges, high schools, and four-year colleges and universities in the state of New Jersey to create meaningful connections that expand research opportunities and foster mentorship while inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Rutgers senior vice president for research Michael Zwick and vice president of Universitywide Core Services Jeetendra Eswaraka will both speak at the second Tecniplast VISTA symposium, hosted by Rutgers University—New Brunswick from August 10-13. The event will include a site tour of Rutgers’ state-of-the-art automated vivarium.

VISTA, which stands for Vivarium Innovating for Sustainability, Technology, and Advancement, will bring together leaders from across the biomedical research community to explore how digital technologies and automation are shaping the future of vivarium operations. Drs. Zwick and Eswaraka will discuss the challenges faced by research institutions and how Rutgers University is a leader in developing and using AI and other advanced technologies to streamline processes across its core services.

A Rutgers University food systems research team, led by Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Distinguished Professor of Plant Biology Jim Simon, completed the first full cycle of community-led food security policy co-development across all four Federated States of Micronesia (Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae), which faces an urgent food security crisis driven by climate change and a decades-long dependency on imported foods that replaced its once self-sustaining traditional food systems.

This milestone work delivered co-authored, collaborative, evidence-based, state-specific Food Security Policy Action Items to local stakeholders, marking the culmination of multi-year participatory action research that began in 2022.

Rutgers Office for Research hosted its fourth annual Directors Camp, an invitation-only event focused on the executive management of lab animal care programs, where attendees shared best practices and heard from industry experts.

The event brought together directors, associate directors, and leaders from leading institutions across the United States and Canada, providing them the opportunity to attend presentations on managing budget, staff, customers, equipment, and facilities, share best practices, discuss current and upcoming trends, and network with peers.

Speakers included Rutgers senior vice president for research Michael Zwick, who provided the welcoming remarks, as well as his fellow Office for Research colleagues vice president for Universitywide Core Services Jeetendra Eswaraka, and assistant vice president for Finance & Administration Todd Slawsky.

Guest presenters included Speculo Business and Clinical Services founder Donna Matthews Jarrell, professor and director of Yale Animal Resources Center James Macy, Jr., and former director of Harvard’s Office of Animal Resources and Boston University's Animal Science Center Steve Niemi, all of whom founded the event along with Dr. Eswaraka. The keynote speaker was AAALAC International Chief Accreditation Officer Debra Hickman.
