OUR EXPERTISE

EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Our expertise in education and career development focuses on the foundations that lead to women’s advancement in the workforce, including the development and implementation of policy in our education and workforce systems. Our initiatives work with local, state, and national organizations through funded research projects, experiential learning oppor

tunities for youth, technical assistance to schools, industries, and organizations, and collaborations with government and policy-makers. Our Leadership through Equity and Diversity in Education (LEADE) initiative embodies much of this work, and ensures all learners access and success in high quality education and career programs, with professional development and institutional transformation models leading to greater equity outcomes. WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP AND ADVANCEMENT
Our focus on women’s leadership and advancement addresses the needs of professional working women by studying workplace culture and women’s leadership, conducting research, and sponsoring educational programs for students and experienced professionals. In addition to research on effective leadership development practices, we provide programs that develop women leaders in the public and private sectors, at every rung of the ladder from the classroom to the boardroom. Initiatives include: the WINGS (Women Investing in and Guiding Students) Mentoring Program, Leadership Development for Early Career Women, and the Rutgers Executive Leadership Program for Professional Women. Our collaborators these programs include the Rutgers Institute for Women’s Leadership, and SMLR’s Executive and Professional Education. WORKING FAMILIES
Our focus on working families aims to improve workplace programs and policies which reflect the contemporary lives of all families so workers can be both productive employees and responsible family members. We conduct research on conditions and policies that affect working poor families in New Jersey the nation, and offer policy recommendations to help these families achieve economic self-sufficiency. Areas of research and policy expertise include: pay equity, the home-based childcare workforce, paid family leave and paid sick days, degree completion for adult workers, and minimum wage. WOMEN & STEM
Our expertise on women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) includes a research and practice agenda, developed through an intersectional lens, that drives institutions and governments toward more equitable policies and practices which address the growing concern over gender disparities in the STEM workforce. We research and develop innovative educational models to increase women’s and girls’ participation in STEM programs, conduct research on the attrition and retention of undergraduate women in STEM, and their capability to thrive in both academic and non-academic careers. This , we honor women’s leadership and contributions—even as women’s histories and achievements are being diminished in some spaces.

In New Jersey, meaningful change is underway, from women’s political leadership to policy advances that strengthen gender equity and support working families. Yet women’s work, especially in care sectors like child and elder care, remains undervalued.

Investing in women and care work is essential to building a stronger, more equitable NJ. The advocacy continues. OUR RESEARCH CONTINUES.

The Rutgers Child Care Research Collaborative has released a new publication: Child Care Decision-Making Among Parents who Work Nonstandard Hours.

In conversations with NJ parents working evenings, nights, weekends, and unpredictable schedules, three patterns consistently appeared:

◾️ Parents often change jobs, turn down hours, or lose income when work schedules and care availability, and cost don’t line up.
◾️ Families rely on multiple caregivers and arrangements to make work possible.
◾️ Relatives and friends serve as the backbone of care because they offer trust and flexibility when formal options cannot accommodate shifting hours.

These findings illustrate what navigating a child care system built around standard workdays is like, even as many jobs and employment opportunities fall outside those hours.

Last Monday, the First 1,000 Days Policy Coalition launched the Start Strong NJ campaign to make affordable child care available to every family in the Garden State that needs it.

We’re proud to be a founding member of the Coalition, grounding its work in research and evidence and bringing partners to the table. It was inspiring to be part of the launch event, which brought together gubernatorial candidates, business leaders, policymakers, advocates, educators, and community organizations from across the state.

Child care is essential to families, communities, and our economy. To learn more and get involved, visit startstrongnj.org | first1000days.org.

$30 million short of what is needed to maintain open enrollment and serve additional children from existing families, the NJ Child Care Assistance Program will stop accepting new applications submitted after July 31.

Parents who are currently enrolled will be grandfathered in, as long as they continue to meet eligibility requirements, but many will see their copayments rise to 6% of their income.

A new op ed co-authored by First 1,000 Days Policy Coalition members, Advocates for Children of New Jersey and Center for Women and Work, explains how this budget shortfall hurts NJ families.
