Recently, Samir Varma, a freshman in EHA, wrote a research paper for the Exposition& Argument 103 course, “The Unadaptable Subgenre: How Lovecraftian Horror was Abandoned by the Cinema of Dread”, which was selected to be presented the 2024 Rutgers Undergraduate Resarch and Writing Conference, and additionally won an award for the best 103 paper written by a student in the School of Engineering! Recently, an HA alum, Jean-Paul Calin, was able to attend an event in Paris with Professor Holloway! He says:
“Graduating from the Honors Academy in 2022, I embarked on a journey to France where I am currently pursuing my master’s in renewable energy at the Polytechnic Institute of Paris. Recently, I had the honor of meeting our President at the Rutgers in Paris event, a gathering that brought together members of the Rutgers global community to celebrate and connect over our shared values. This moment underscored the strength and appreciation of our wide-reaching Rutgers community, of which I am proud to be a part.”

Recently, 4 Honors Academy students (Rudra Joshi '25, Mukund Ramakrishnan '24, Cecilia Diaz '24, Sriya Bapatla '24) had the opportunity to attend the Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference, in Annapolis, MD! This year's theme was Genetics: Understanding and Addressing Today's Challenges. They were able to hear from experts in the field, including the Director of the National Cancer Institute, an ex-FBI Lab Director, and a Lab Director at the CDC. Here's what the students had to say about their experience:

"I absolutely loved getting to know people in my field and beyond. The NASEC conference was a fabulous opportunity to not only get to know about today’s crucial developments in engineering and science, but also develop friendships with like-minded scientists alongside whom I will build my career." - Mukund R., ECE '24

Get to know our wonderful envoys!

Nivedha:
Majoring in chemical engineering, minoring in computer science and hopefully, cognitive science! I like to do spin classes at werblin for fun, watch horror/thriller movies, doodle, and sing :) My favorite part about being in the honors academy is the community! Many of my closest friends are from the honors academy, and I wouldn’t have met them so early on in college if it weren’t for all our classes together + living at barr floor 2! The upperclassmen in HA were also extremely friendly and supportive when I was an underclassmen.

Kira:
Biomedical Engineering major with a minor in International and Global Studies and maybe Russian. I usually work whenever I'm not studying but I find working fun, so I spend most of my time either at one of OIT offices or at Tacoria. My favorite part of HA is getting to meet and take classes with the community and how everyone already feels like a family even if I didn't talk to them too much.

Sriya:
Majoring in Mechanical Engineering :) I like to be outdoors in my free time (hiking, running, basking in the sun). I love being a part of the honors academy because the community is so kind and giving!! Both my closest mentors and best friends have been made through going to Campfire Nights, cramming for exams, and exploring campus together!

Our first student spotlight of the semester is Victoria Percoco BME ‘23! Read more about her experiences below:

“Hello there! My name is Victoria Percoco and I am a senior in the BS/MS combined degree program majoring in biomedical engineering with a minor in Italian. This year, I've had the opportunity to fully immerse myself into research through the JJ Slade Scholars program. My project is focused on the influence of different biochemical factors on the kinetics and dynamics of the degradation of blood clots, and I'm very excited to be building on this research as I pursue my Master of Science degree next year. Being a BME student in the Honors Academy has provided me with the tools and confidence to pursue eye-opening industry internships in Manufacturing and Quality at Eli Lilly and Company and in Medical Affairs at Taiho Oncology, Inc. I am planning to pursue pharmaceutical product development and engineering technology upon finishing my graduate work. 

On campus, I love being part of the amazing community of SWE and speaking and connecting with fellow students at HA events. In my free time, I enjoy crocheting (I'm working on a little army of 8 inch bears), painting, and spending time with my incredible friends, many of whom are awesome people from the Honors Academy! From November 6-8, the U.S. Naval Academy hosted the 11th Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference. According to their website:
“The conference provides a forum to bring together the nation's future Navy and Marine Corps officers with their peers from other colleges and universities, both civilian and military, from across the country. Participants engage in discussion and research on some of the key scientific and technical challenges facing the nation and the world.”

Two of our honors academy scholars, Mukund Ramakrishnan and Anis Chihoub attended the conference. Mukund says:
“I had a fabulous time at NASEC, and learned so much about developing sustainable approaches to energy production. I also had an inside look into the United States Navy’s lab facilities and learned a lot about national defense.”
