Instead of a test, Mrs. Flanagan’s psychology students got to put their Stress and Health unit into practice with a stress management day. 🧘‍♀️🫧

Students enjoyed a variety of activities, including meditation, coloring, making DIY stress balls and friendship bracelets, creating trail mix, blowing bubbles, popping bubble wrap and writing inspirational quotes and things they’re grateful for.

A fun way to wrap up the unit while learning a few ways to manage stress!

Fire safety is an important skill for everyone to know! 🔥

This week, students across all UVCC programs are participating in fire safety training led by the Piqua, Sidney and Troy Fire Departments. Students start with a short lesson on fire basics, extinguisher types and general fire safety before breaking into small groups for hands-on practice using a fire extinguisher to put out a fire.

A big thank you to all three local fire departments for helping our students build these important, real-world skills!

Our Launch interns spent Monday building teamwork, strengthening connections, and getting out on the water! The Wilderness Inquiry team traveled from Minnesota to lead leadership and team-building activities before everyone headed out for a canoeing adventure. 🛶

This has become an early fall tradition our interns look forward to each year. The experience gives interns, job coaches, paraprofessionals, and staff a chance to connect and get to know one another outside the classroom. We’re grateful to the Miami County Foundation for helping make it happen!

Our FFA programs had a fun day today! 🚜 Veterinary Science, Ag & Power Technologies, and Landscape & Natural Resources hosted their annual Farm Display Day, giving students the chance to drive their tractors to school and bring in some of their own animals.

We had quite the crew on campus, including horses, ducks, calves, chickens, rabbits, a tortoise and even kittens! Students from Edison State Community College’s preschool and UVCC’s preschool also stopped by to meet the animals and learn a little more about farm life.

Our students got to take on the role of teacher for the day, answering questions about the animals and equipment and sharing what they know with their visitors. 🌾

The skills you learn at UVCC can follow you into careers you may not have imagined when you were a student. For Tonya Hammonds, those skills have helped build a career in the financial industry.

A 1992 graduate of our Secretarial Specialists program, Tonya is now a Private Client Investment Associate at JP Morgan Securities. Her work requires strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Tonya credits the hands-on training she received at UVCC with giving her a strong foundation for supporting investment advisors and managing client relationships. One skill she still uses every day is being proficient with software.

Her advice to current students: take full advantage of the hands-on learning opportunities, stay curious, ask questions, and keep building your knowledge. 💙

Last Friday, Building Maintenance students visited the Piqua skate park, where Hemmert Concrete was pouring concrete in areas that were previously planters.

This wasn’t your typical concrete pour! Between a late delivery, limited site access, and multiple elevations involving ramps, steps, and slopes, the crew had plenty of challenges to work through. Students got a firsthand look at how crews adapt to jobsite conditions and even had the opportunity to help out by cleaning up fresh concrete, washing tools, and floating some edges.

While onsite, they also discussed the skills involved in concrete work and how learning a trade like this could open the door to future employment or even a side job. We would like to extend a big thank you to Hemmert Concrete for giving our students the opportunity to experience a real jobsite and see what it takes to get the work done!

Attention Sophomores: it's about that time 😏

In just a couple weeks, our team will be visiting your school! While we're there, you will have the opportunity to talk with our student ambassadors and learn about all of the career tech programs UVCC has to offer. During our visit, you'll choose two programs to visit on Explore Careers Day on December 2! Then, applications will open for the 2027-2028 school year at 6pm on December 3.

We couldn't let the month of October go by without recognizing Manufacturing Month! Manufacturing and Machining Technologies is our program spotlight of the week. ⚙️

Students in this hands-on program master the skills needed to create the parts and tools that keep industries moving, from CNC machining to blueprint reading and quality control.
There is a broad range of certification courses available within MMT including OSHA 10, Scissor Lift, Forklift, HAAS Basic Mill Operator Certification and HAAS Basic Lathe Operator Certification.

With manufacturing being a top industry in both Miami and Shelby counties, our students are training for high-demand careers right in their own backyard. 🏭
