ARTIST STATEMENT:

“My work focuses on my own experiences as a woman growing up in the Midwest. Manipulating with color and composition, I focus on specific details that are part of a bigger story. I choose to depict moments with friends, animals, and nature. Pigment and light obscure the understanding of what is reality and what is fiction. Saturated with rosy retrospection, my work aims to recall my experiences with a dreamy hue, allowing the viewer to create their own understanding of the story beyond what is shown to them.”

We’re excited to have the ceramic sculptures of Brandon Lowery on display in the Anne Vaccaro and David Myers Gallery until March 27! Stop by during normal campus hours to check out his exhibition, “Diamond in the Rough.”

Brandon was born and raised in Dayton. In 2016, he received his Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in ceramics from Miami University. His work drifts between hyperrealism to abstract anthropomorphic forms. Brandon mainly works in clay, but his sculptures utilize many mediums. His forms instill a feeling of discomfort but draw the viewer closer with fine details and chosen color palettes. This push and pull of uneasiness and discomfort mixed with the strangely beautiful goes hand in hand with Brandon’s concept of social anxiety, finding a sense of place, and questioning societal norms.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

“Working intuitively with clay, I lean into its responsiveness and resistance. Marks left by the hand, shifts in form, and surface disruptions created during firing are not corrected but emphasized. These traces become metaphors for lived experience: erosion, adaptation, and endurance. The contrast between coarse, stone-like areas and softer, more fluid elements reflects the coexistence of strength and vulnerability within the body.

Color and material function symbolically rather than descriptively. The interplay between muted, raw surfaces and moments of heightened sheen or color and value emerges from imperfection. Like a diamond before refinement, the form resists polish, proposing that worth and presence exist prior to completion.

The sculpture occupies a space between the familiar and the ambiguous, inviting viewers to recognize emotional or bodily associations without resolving into a single narrative. ‘Diamond in the Rough’ asks how fragility, pressure, and incompleteness can shape identity and how transformation often reveals itself most clearly through what remains unfinished.”

The Edison State Art Department will feature the ceramic sculptures of Brandon Lowery during its March exhibition. The department will display the exhibit, “Diamond in the Rough,” in the Anne Vaccaro and David Myers Gallery at the Piqua Campus during normal campus hours from March 2 to March 27, 2026.

“‘Diamond in the Rough’ asks how fragility, pressure, and incompleteness can shape identity, and how transformation often reveals itself most clearly through what remains unfinished,” Lowery said of the exhibit.

We’re excited to have the work of mixed-media artist John Sousa on display in the Anne Vaccaro and David Myers Gallery from October 6–30! Stop by during normal campus hours to check out his exhibition, “Deep Dive: The Chaos Fields Paintings.”

John lives and has a studio in Springboro, Ohio. He was a National Scholastic Art Scholar and graduated with a BFA from Bradley University in 1982. John was a featured artist in issues #167 and #149 of New American Paintings’ Midwest edition. He has exhibited his work in a dozen states across the country and has received two Montgomery County Art Fellowships. Summerfair awarded him an AIA Grant in 2014.

His long-term focus has been language, photography, and how we perceive and infer meaning. He believes in using style alongside formal art elements to explore his interests more thoroughly. John has always been concerned with the formal qualities of art and is constantly pushing the bounds of the materials he uses.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

“These works, from my Chaos Fields series, are mixed-media paintings that incorporate collage and new dimensional printing technologies. I use fragments of images—text, symbols, and patterns—that are silk-screen printed (using dimensional inks) and then collaged onto the work. The works are then painted (using primarily white to enhance the texture), producing a uniquely textured surface. Over this surface are printed digital images using new printing technologies, such as UV-cured printing. These allow me to print over the textured surfaces. I then go back in with more painting, collage, and printing, creating a subtle layering. I see the various printing technologies as new ways to apply paint.

I think of these as sumptuous visual poems. The works are intimate, and they encourage looking. The painterly and textural elements entice the viewer to not only see, but to want to feel the artwork. They are collage-based mashups of diverse and competing styles. They incorporate aspects of Formalism, Pop, Collage, Visual Poetry, Dada, and more.

Our perception is very fragmented. Our minds stitch the fragments together into a smoother view. Understanding this, I want to create mixed-media paintings that are not literal but suggestive. I aim to create work that is both visually stimulating and thought-provoking. The more time one spends looking, the more they will see, and the more they will see how things are related. These works are not representations of the world; they are more representations of our minds wandering.”
