REVerb Afterschool Reaching Elk Valley with Excellence and Rising Beyond Our Philosophy:
We believe that every child can learn and that no child should be left behind.

In order to supplement the hard work of the classroom teacher, we have planned supplemental approaches to learning. Students need to connect with knowledge by participating in activities that are related to real-life, both emotionally and practically.
• Students need to grow socially as well as intellectually.
• Students need several varied approaches to information or skills.
• Students learn more easily when they understand the usefulness of information or skills and how they apply to their lives.
• Students build their knowledge and self-esteem when they receive praise and encouragement.
• Students learn best when they are seen as individuals, apart from their background, race, ethnic group, family situation or financial status.

For Fun Friday, we learned about Kimochi, which is a Japanese word meaning feeling. Then we played Kimochi Charades. The students drew out a Kimochi, which is basically a stuffed emoji, looked at the face and read the feeling word, then had to act it out for the students to guess what it was. Special thanks to Claire, Ella, and Sophia for being Mr. Ross' helpers by learning the game and showing the other students how it was done.

For Legos Thursday, Mrs. Baird talked to the students about community, what it is, and what you might find in one. We even talked about what kinds of things we wish we had in the Elk Valley Community. Then the students were partnered up and challenged with building something they might find in a community. We had a couple of schools, a gas station, a swimming pool, a McDonald's, a hospital, a restaurant (complete with restrooms), and a basketball court.

Our class uses Sami's Circuit, a motivational exercise program that helps kids build confidence, resilience, and healthy habits. This month, we're inviting families to take Sami's Family Challenge: try a new food together! Pick something nobody in your family has tried, give it a taste, and talk about it. It's a fun way to spend time together and show kids that trying new things takes courage. Plus, every family that signs up for the challenge is entered into a raffle to win a $25 Sami’s Circuit store gift card!

Every family has its go-to meals, but there's a whole world of vegetables and healthy recipes out there you haven't discovered yet. This month, your family can try one new vegetable or healthy recipe each week - together.

We are starting a puppetry series on our Fun Fridays. This past Friday, we watched a compilation of Statler and Waldorf videos so the students could see people puppets in action. Then the students did some learning exercises about not flipping the lid. To help the students in this endeavor, they were all given some tiny eyeballs to wear on their hand to practice moving their thumb and not their upper fingers (it's a tough thing to do!). Next, the students were given an opportunity to practice what they learned in an actual show-quality puppet.
