2002 — my first U.S. visa.
Valid for just 3 months, single entry. I came to Orlando to compete at the Pan-American Jiu-Jitsu Championship.
Back then, I was just trying to make things happen with what I had. No structure, no guarantees — just effort, discipline, and direction.
From my hometown, there was zero support from family or friends. At that time, many didn’t understand Jiu-Jitsu and would judge it, thinking it was just a waste of time and that I was wasting my life training all day.
I never tried to play the victim, and I never depended on asking or taking from others. I’ve always preferred to work, train, and build things the right way.
When I arrived in America, it was already about training hard and working hard — earning everything step by step.
Support came in unexpected ways: friends I made through Jiu-Jitsu, the city of Búzios through its Sports and Tourism Department, and the IBJJF, which helped make opportunities like this possible.
Years of work, consistency, and experience later…
I became a U.S. citizen.
It was never just about Jiu-Jitsu — it was about everything built around it, step by step. 🇺🇸

Every trip is a mirror.
In Bogotá, in just 32 hours, I saw myself outside my comfort zone — walking new streets, hearing different accents, connecting with real people.
And I realized something: growth requires stepping into the unknown. It requires curiosity. It requires courage.
Bogotá reminded me there’s still so much of the world to see… and so much of myself to discover. 🇨🇴

Much respect to my brother, training partner, and coach Mathias on earning his 5th degree black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.
This milestone represents far more than technique or time — it represents loyalty, character, and integrity.
As Head Coach of Cantagalo International, Mathias doesn’t just speak about social projects — he truly supports them. Every donation received goes exactly where it should go: to the project, to the community, to the people. No shortcuts. No personal gain hidden behind a good cause.
And true loyalty shows even more when things are not easy.
Mathias remains standing beside his coach, Fernando Tererê — a true legend of Jiu-Jitsu — through highs and lows. When life gets heavy, when moments are difficult, when many disappear, he stays.
Not for media.
Not for exposure.
But out of respect, gratitude, and real bond.
It’s easy to be around someone at their best.
Rare to stay when they’re at their lowest.
Proud to walk this journey with you.
This is real Jiu-Jitsu.
This is real loyalty. 🥋🔥

🥇 BEING A WORLD CHAMPION DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE A GREAT COACH OR A GOOD PERSON 🥋🔥
Some black belts spend 15–20 years training to win medals. Nothing wrong with that-competition is beautiful.
But teaching? Teaching is a completely different art.
A beginner walking into class doesn’t need De La Riva spider guard, inverted guard, K-guard, worm guard, or tripod sweep combinations. That’s like walking into college and the professor immediately gives you your senior-year final exam.
At Juan Reppin Jiu Jitsu Academy, we teach what beginners actually NEED:
✅ How to block a punch
✅ How to escape a choke
✅ How to protect yourself standing and on the ground
✅ How to build confidence from Day 1
34 years on the mats — teaching since 1996.
I don’t just train champions. I build capable, confident adults.
At Juan Reppin Academy, you learn REAL self-defense, safely and step-by-step — from a black belt with 34+ years on the mats
👉 Learn to defend punches, chokes, grabs, and real-life attacks.
👉 No pressure. No ego. No advanced nonsense on day one.

🔥 Being a World Champion Doesn’t Automatically Make You a Great Coach or a Good Person — Period. 🔥
A world title looks impressive.
A gold medal looks shiny.
But here’s the truth no one likes to say out loud:
**🏆 Being a world champion does NOT give you the credentials to say you’re a great teacher or the Best Coach on the Area. lol
Teaching is a completely different skill.**
A competitor spends 15–20 years training hard for THEMSELVES:
• training 3-4 times a day
• drilling advanced guards
• preparing for tournaments
• sharpening their personal game
• focusing on winning medals
• Getting Hurt due OVERTRAINING
Great for competition.
Not great for teaching beginners.
Because a real beginner —
a normal adult with a job, stress, age, responsibility —
does NOT need:
❌ De La Riva
❌ Inverted guard
❌ Spider guard + variations
❌ Fancy sweeps
❌ Competition-style rounds
Not on day one.
Not even on month one.
What a beginner truly needs is:
🛡️ How to defend a punch or a slap
🛡️ How to escape a choke
🛡️ How to control someone bigger
🛡️ How to stay safe on the ground
🛡️ How to avoid injury
🛡️ How to build real confidence
🛡️ How to manage adrenaline and fear
That’s REAL Jiu-Jitsu.
That’s REAL teaching.
I’ve been on the mats for 33+ years.
I started teaching around 1996/97 —
before most current competitors even thought about coaching.
I’ve taught thousands of beginners, parents, professionals, and everyday adults and Competidora..
My job is not to show off.
My job is to teach YOU safely, clearly, and correctly — at YOUR level.
If you want real instruction from someone who actually knows how to teach from the ground up…
I’m here for you.
