Mitchell Wins Individual Title as Sandhills Men’s Golf Captures Pioneers Fall Invitational

The Sandhills Community College men’s golf team captured the team championship at the Pioneers Fall Invitational, hosted by Spartanburg Methodist College, finishing nine-over par to claim a 27-stroke victory in the 13-team tournament.

The Flyers closed the three-round event with a team score of 289 in Tuesday’s final round, their lowest round of the tournament. Sandhills opened with consecutive rounds of 292 before finishing at 873 overall, nine strokes over par.

Host Spartanburg Methodist College finished second at 36-over par, followed by Columbia College at 55-over. Bryan College (+57) and Georgia Military College (+59) rounded out the top five.

William Mitchell led the way for the Flyers, capturing the individual championship with an eight-under-par total of 208. Mitchell opened with a 69, followed with a 68 and closed with a 71 to finish seven strokes ahead of the runner-up. His three-round performance established him as the tournament’s top individual finisher while helping Sandhills secure the team title.

Michael Switzer also finished among the tournament’s top performers, placing third overall at three-over par. Switzer recorded consecutive opening-round scores of 72 before carding a 75 in the final round to finish at 219.

Trevor Leeds delivered one of the strongest final-round performances for the Flyers, shooting a one-under-par 71 to climb into a tie for sixth place at 10-over par. Leeds improved significantly after opening rounds of 77 and 78.

Drake Hull finished tied for eighth at 11-over par after closing with an even-par 72, while Alec Thiele also tied for eighth at 11-over. Thiele carded rounds of 74, 76 and 77.

With Mitchell leading the individual standings and four Flyers finishing inside the top 10, Sandhills turned in a strong team performance from start to finish. The Flyers’ final-round 289 helped secure the championship and capped a successful trip to Spartanburg.
