The glamorous side of cake decorating they don’t show you… 😂

Sifting powdered sugar. Lots and LOTS of powdered sugar.

Is it my favorite job? Absolutely not.
Do I do it anyway? Yep. Because smooth, creamy buttercream is worth the extra step. 🎂🙌

Just a little behind-the-scenes look at one of those not-so-exciting steps that goes into every cake!

Worth it? Yep. Still hate it? Also yep. 😂

Before the decorating comes the part you don’t usually see… 🎂

The actual CAKE. 😂

As a custom cake decorator, I share a lot of buttercream, piping, pretty details and finished cakes around here…

But every one of those cakes has to start somewhere.

Today, it’s lemon cake. 🍋

And yes—it smells as good as you think it does.

Scratch baking might not be the glamorous part of cake decorating, but getting the cake itself right matters just as much as making it pretty.

A few little things I do along the way:

🥚 Crack eggs into a separate bowl first.
Because fishing eggshells out of cake batter is not my idea of a good time.

🥛 Mix the wet ingredients separately.

🥣 Whisk the dry ingredients together so everything is evenly distributed.

🍰 Alternate the flour and milk mixtures when mixing the batter.

Then fill those pans…

Into the oven they go…

And wait for that beautiful golden top. 🙌

Because a custom cake should do more than LOOK good.

It should taste pretty dang good, too. 😉

Next comes my favorite part: turning these layers into an actual cake. 🎂

🚧 Watch me CONSTRUCT a construction birthday cake from start to finish! 🏗️🎂

And yes… constructing the actual cake was definitely part of the job. 😂

I carved the layers to create the two-level design, gave the buttercream a concrete-colored makeover, added plenty of Oreo “dirt,” and then brought in the heavy equipment. 🚜

Mini M&M “rocks” ✔️
A crane actually holding the birthday number ✔️

I think one of my favorite parts of custom cake decorating is figuring out how in the world I’m going to make the idea work…and then watching a pile of cake and buttercream turn into THIS. 🤎

6 piping tips + a whole lotta buttercream later… 🤍😂

I LOVE how this little “Just Married” cake came together! There’s just something about all that vintage Lambeth piping on a heart cake. 😍

I’ve had people ask which piping tips I use, so this time I actually remembered to show them as I went! 🙌 And yes, my camera angle completely failed me during one of them… but we’re just going to roll with it. 😂🤷‍♀️

Add in those tiny pearl details and I’m obsessed with the finished look. 🤍

Two months late—but this sweet girl still deserves her 16th birthday post. 🤍

Brynne’s birthday was a big one! She got her driver’s license that morning and celebrated with a cake inspired by The Summer I Turned Pretty—or, in her case, The Summer I Turned 16. 🩷🌊🚙 I loved bringing her vision to life and creating something that felt completely her.

Then, just two months later, life took an unexpected turn. Severe abdominal pain brought Brynne to the emergency room and ultimately led to emergency surgery. During that process, doctors also discovered something we otherwise may not have known about for years.

Thankfully, the diagnosis doesn’t affect her much right now, but it may shape parts of her future. She is handling the news incredibly well and showing just how strong and tough she truly is. There are still things to process and navigate, so prayers for continued healing, peace, wisdom, and her future would mean so much. 🤍

God’s timing is impeccable. What began as a frightening night brought important answers at exactly the time He knew they were needed.

Happy belated sweet sixteen to my beautiful Brynne. I’m endlessly grateful that I get to be your mom—and only slightly terrified that you’re now behind the wheel. 😂

I love you to the beach and back! 🌊💗

Watch buttercream bloom. 🌸✨

A little pink, a little white, a touch of yellow… and suddenly a piping bag turns into a whole box of hydrangeas. 😍

These might be some of my favorite cupcakes to pipe because no two flowers ever turn out exactly the same—and that soft blend of colors gets me every time.

Pretty enough for a garden. Better because they're cake. 🧁😉

Would you pick pink hydrangeas or go with blue + purple?

A closer look at all those Bluey details. 💙🧡🌈

From the custom-colored rainbow to the little paw prints, clouds, sprinkles and Bluey + Bingo on top—this cake was such a fun one to bring together!

And can we talk about that rainbow?! 😍 I love how the Bluey-inspired colors turned out.
