On March 19, the UAPB Aquaculture and Fisheries Club held the return of the White Bass Bonanza. The club was unable to hold the tournament in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and members were eager for the 2022 tournament. The weather on tournament day was great. You couldn’t have asked for a better day. Despite the great weather on the day of the tournament, the day and night before were cold and slowed the bite. Several club members attempted to catch the biggest white bass, the most white bass, and the biggest other species. For the 2022 White Bass Bonanza, Dr. Steve Lochmann caught six white bass and won the trophy for the most white bass by just one fish. John Brewer caught a white bass that weighed a whopping 2.455 lbs. This large white bass won John the trophy for the largest white bass. John also caught a freshwater drum while fishing for white bass. This freshwater drum earned John the trophy for the biggest other species. After the tournament, the club had a fish fry. The fish fry was made possible by using fish that were caught prior to the tournament by club members, by Jamie Kindschuh allowing the club to use her personal fryer (a special thanks to her dad for frying all the food), and by all the individuals who attended the event. Everyone in attendance had a great time throughout the day and all received participation gifts in the form of multiple packs of baits that were handmade by John Brewer. Thanks to the club for all the assistance with the tournament. We could not have held the event without everyone’s participation. The club is looking forward to future events and especially future White Bass Bonanzas.

On October 3, 2021, the UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Club had a cleanup day at the north boat ramp at Lake Saracen in Pine Bluff. We removed 22 bags of trash, a 100ft water hose, a broken fish tank, a broken TV, 4 tires, window blinds, and some wooden boards. The club removed all this garbage in an hour and a half. This was also a joint cleanup with The University of Central Arkansas Fisheries and Wildlife Society (UCA FWS). We arranged it so that the UAPB AFC would cleanup a location in Pine Bluff and UCA FWS would cleanup a location in Conway. Afterwards, we had a Zoom social between the UAPB AFC and UCA FWS. In the Zoom social, we discussed future joint events, socials, and the upcoming Arkansas AFS Chapter meeting. The Zoom social was also a great chance for the two groups to learn a little about each club as well as the individuals in the clubs.

The UAPB Aquaculture/Fisheries Club had a great time providing some demonstrations and assistance for the Aquatic Sciences Day that is held every other year at the UAPB Aquaculture Research Station. There were multiple school districts that were at this event. Students from these schools got a chance to see some of the inner workings of aquaculture and fisheries work. We are always excited to be able to educate people about our lines of work and we look forward to the next Aquatic Sciences Day.
