This trimester, the youngest cohort is exploring the body by learning about its anatomy in embodied and engaging ways. While learning about the skeletal system, learners played a game where they were challenged with identifying animal bones by using diagrams of human skeletons. Many learners correctly identified an opossum femur, deer rib, a raccoon jaw bone, squirrel skull, and deer vertebrae.

When we say that “Springhouse is a school for regenerative culture builders,” we are not just referring to our students being change agents in the future. At Springhouse, our students are building regenerative culture RIGHT NOW. One of our seniors is a certified yoga teacher and she leads a yoga class weekly. She is honing her leadership skills while helping other students connect to themselves through yoga.

Merrivale 1.

In the granite bed where I sleep,
There lies a bear whose breath is the rise
And fall of stars between these
Rough rows of stone.

The bear’s mouth is the October sky,
As hungry as a cave in the mountains,
As black as the water in a dream In which you fell and died, then lived
To tell the tale, remade from your remains.

I place the only copy of my dog-eared life Into the broken kist of the
Great Bear’s mouth
And it leans out of the heaving night to
Eat the boy and man I’ve been,
Sleeps again with my dreams churning,
Hollow and restless in its ever-pregnant,
Ever-aching belly of the night.

Hail, Merrivale, my bed of stone and stars.
Here, I’ll rest my memories and no other
Story will have a fast hold of me now.

How do we fully engage a moving meditation practice? One way to explore this question is by moving to five different universal rhythms within the structure of an asana practice. Join us for “The Rhythms of Yoga,” a journey through practices that explore facets of our own natural rhythms: Grounding and flowing, angular and direct, messy and fast, heart-opening and authentic, and reflective and still.

Series of six classes, held on TUESDAYS, 6:15-7:45 PM

We will be practicing indoors (mask required) during the cooler months. If there is warmer weather, class will be held outdoors. Some yoga experience is recommended, though all classes will be offered in an all-levels fashion.

Springhouse needs four things to thrive: people, physical resources, money, and prayer (or mindful attention). We thrive because we are abundant in these four areas. We know that our work is needed in the world, and as long as we show up as best we can to serve the vision and mission of Springhouse, we will be supported. That has been our ethos since we began, and it has served us well.

From December 1st to December 17th, we held daily morning sessions (you can find the recordings on our page) to come together in mindfulness and to “wait in the dark.” Each day, a poem or reading was shared. “For Light” by John O’Donohue was shared during one of our final gatherings:

For Light
by John O’Donohue
Light cannot see inside things.
That is what the dark is for:
Minding the interior,
Nurturing the draw of growth
Through places where death
In its own way turns into life.

In the glare of neon times,
Let our eyes not be worn
By surfaces that shine
With hunger made attractive.

That our thoughts may be true light,Finding their way into words
Which have the weight of shadow
To hold the layers of truth.
That we never place our trust
In minds claimed by empty light,
Where one-sided certainties
Are driven by false desire.

When we look into the heart,
May our eyes have the kindness
And reverence of candlelight.
That the searching of our minds
Be equal to the oblique
Crevices and corners where
The mystery continues to dwell,
Glimmering in fugitive light.

When we are confined inside
The dark house of suffering
That moonlight might find a window.
When we become false and lost
That the severe noon-light
Would cast our shadow clear.

When we love, that dawn-light
Would lighten our feet
Upon the waters.

As we grow old, that twilight
Would illuminate treasureIn the fields of memory.

And when we come to search for God,
Let us first be robed in night,
Put on the mind of morning
To feel the rush of light
Spread slowly inside
The color and stillness
Of a found word.

Merrivale 1.

In the granite bed where I sleep,
There lies a bear whose breath is the rise
And fall of stars between these
Rough rows of stone.

The bear’s mouth is the October sky,
As hungry as a cave in the mountains,
As black as the water in a dream In which you fell and died, then lived
To tell the tale, remade from your remains.

I place the only copy of my dog-eared life Into the broken kist of the
Great Bear’s mouth
And it leans out of the heaving night to
Eat the boy and man I’ve been,
Sleeps again with my dreams churning,
Hollow and restless in its ever-pregnant,
Ever-aching belly of the night.

Hail, Merrivale, my bed of stone and stars.

Our Story

Springhouse is an intergenerational, learner-centered, and competency-based learning environment. We understand that growing up well requires a solid educational framework as well as the participation of the entire community. The Springhouse 7th-12th grade program facilitates the holistic development of our learners. Through the Fields of Study and the various components offered in our program, learners work toward exemplary demonstration of both foundational and advanced competencies. Learners engage with Four Core Practices including: learning by doing, mentoring, community collaborations, and embodied living. The result is a dynamic learning environment that strives to balance structure and freedom.
