This is the Pikeville Collegiate Institute in the 1880s. This was the first academic building in use and it was built with the help of students! They both made and laid the bricks. Now the building houses our Coleman College of Business classrooms.

The first principal of the Pikeville Collegiate Institute, David Blyth, arrived in 1888 to begin his other role as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Pikeville.
Unfortunately President Blythe wouldn't see the first class graduate in 1894, but he definitely left his legacy on the school. During his short time as president he donated more than 1-year of pay to the school to help with costs. Much like the founders, Blythe had a vision for the school and he was dedicated to see that vision achieved.

Welcome to a new school year! This is the first of an installment of posts to lead followers through the history of our school. Consider it an introduction of sorts.
Of course, we're starting with one of our founders!
Dr. James P. Hendrick was a founding father of Pikeville Collegiate Institute (PCI), and also helped to organize the Presbyterian Church of Pikeville, KY in 1883. Hendrick, alongside founders Alderson and Condit, dreamed of creating a school for mountain boys and girls to receive a formal education, and from that dream, PCI was born.
