Industrial Electrician Assistant Program
In a typical high school vocational electricity class, such as Mr. Mike Sykes’ classroom, focused on kitchen countertop receptacles, the session begins with the instructor greeting students and outlining the day’s objectives. The atmosphere is energetic and collaborative.
The class often kicks off with a brief lecture on safety, highlighting the importance of GFCI outlets in kitchens to prevent electrical shocks. The instructor mixes in anecdotes and humor to keep students engaged, ensuring they grasp the seriousness of safety while enjoying the learning process.
After the safety discussion, students break into small groups to design their layouts for receptacles in a mock kitchen setup. They collaborate, sharing ideas and making sketches while considering appliance placement and convenience.
Next, they gather the necessary materials—receptacles, wires, and tools—and start the hands-on work of installing outlets. The room buzzes with activity as students practice wiring and troubleshooting under the instructor’s guidance, who circulates to offer tips and encouragement.
As they work, students learn to test their installations for safety and functionality, often discussing challenges and solutions together. The class concludes with group presentations, where students showcase their finished projects and reflect on what they learned.
The instructor wraps up with a light-hearted reminder about the importance of safety in real-world applications, leaving students motivated and eager for the next class.

Spotlight on Trade Skills: Industrial Electrician Assistant
Trade schools play a crucial role in preparing students for impactful careers. Last week, students got their first hands-on experience with wiring breaker boxes.
Braxton and his classmates all tackled the challenging task of wiring an electrical box with breakers—a key skill for any aspiring electrician. Under the expert guidance of his instructor, Mr. Mike Sykes, Braxton completed this task with great skill and precision, demonstrating his growing expertise in the field.
Programs like this are equipping students with practical, real-world skills and shaping the future of the industry.
The Process
The student carefully learns to wire a breaker box by first turning off the power and reviewing a wiring diagram. They prepare and organize the wires, connecting each one to the right spot in the breaker box. With guidance from their instructor, they ensure all connections are secure and follow safety rules.
As they work, the student asks questions to better understand how everything fits together and why each step is important. Their attention to detail and careful approach helps them successfully complete the wiring, and they gain confidence in their ability to handle electrical tasks safely and effectively.
Trade schools play a vital role in equipping students with the practical skills and knowledge needed for successful careers, particularly in specialized fields like the Industrial Electrician Assistant Program.
