Jr. Farm Markets
The Pike County Local Foods Group has spent the last few weeks visiting all Pike County 4th grade classrooms with fresh produce and a lesson about buying and eating local foods! The group’s purpose is to provide education and awareness of local foods in Pike County.
In continuing this purpose, the group partnered with Way Farms in Waverly to take produce to each of the six schools in the county. Volunteers from the group picked up produce and set up a jr. farm market at each school. Tammy Jones, with OSU Extension Pike County, taught the fourth graders about the importance of eating fresh produce, buying produce grown locally, and supporting local farm families.
Following the lesson, students were given a $10 coupon to spend on produce provided by Way Farms. They selected from a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that they took home to share with their family. Amanda Perkins, Dan Remley, and Sara Moon, members of the Pike County Local Foods Group, assisted by running the market and helping students select their produce.
This project would not have been possible if it were not for the sponsorship funds from Adena Health and Beaver VFW Post 9942. These organizations provided financial support to allow each student to select and purchase produce.
