Be a Good Hypocrite!

There was a Chassidic Jew who was a disciple of the Tzemach Tzedek. He lived in the town of Lubavitch, but his business required him to travel frequently to major European cities. When he would come to Leipzig, Paris, or Petersburg, he would take off his long Chassidic coat and hat and dress like the other businessmen around him. But when he returned to Lubavitch, he would change back into his traditional Chassidic clothing.
Eventually, he started feeling like a hypocrite, as if he were living a double life. One day, upon returning to Lubavitch, he decided not to change back into his Chassidic clothing. When the Tzemach Tzedek saw him, he looked surprised.
The Chosid said, “Rebbe, I’m sorry to break the news to you, but when I’m away, I always dress like this. I only put on my long coat when I come back here. But now I’ve decided, who am I fooling? I don’t want to come to you pretending to be someone I’m not.”
