Please join us in welcoming Addison, our new Merrill Dorm Parent.

Addison is not new to Oliverian. He grew up around this campus while his dad, Brett, taught music here for nearly 15 years. In a lot of ways, he never really left.

What he brings back with him is new. Addison earned his master's degree from King's College London, worked as an editorial peer reviewer for an academic journal, and spent more than two years as a winter huts caretaker with the Appalachian Mountain Club. That last one matters here. Winter in the White Mountains teaches you a particular kind of steadiness, and that is exactly what students want in the person down the hall.

The stool is not really the point.

Joshua walks through what students are actually building here. Along the way they learn to recognize the trees around them, and the woods stop reading as generic green space and start feeling like something they know.

The framing is deliberately practical. The forest is under pressure, and there are real things a person can do about that. Students leave knowing they're capable of making a difference, because they've already made one.

Structure and routine do a lot of that quiet work. So does a schedule that gives students enough support to feel steady and enough room to feel like themselves.

The chickens do not care how your morning went. That turns out to matter more than you'd think.

Joshua teaches stewardship, homesteading, woodworking, forestry, farming and more at Oliverian. Here, he explains why the animals are the cornerstone of the whole thing, and what happens to the students who find their way in.

Some of them had passed on every other outdoor offering on campus. Something about the animals reached them where nothing else had.

For a parent who has heard their child has no interests, we'd offer another possibility. The interest exists. It just hasn't been introduced yet.
