Discover The Art of Oral Storytelling!

Before there were books and screens, there were stories – told aloud, shared in community, and remembered by heart. Piedmont Adult School’s new class, The Art of Oral Storytelling, invites students to step into this timeless tradition. Through listening, laughter, and shared storytelling, students will experience how spoken stories continue to move us in powerful and deeply human ways.

Taught by professional storyteller Cynthia Cudaback, this class introduces students to the fundamentals of story structure and presentation in a supportive, creative environment. Participants will listen to and share stories with classmates, gaining hands-on experience telling well-known tales and developing personal stories of their own. The course emphasizes presence, connection, and the joy of storytelling—inviting students to listen deeply, laugh freely, and learn together.

Whether you are curious about storytelling as an art form, interested in public speaking, or simply love a good story, this class offers a welcoming space to explore narrative, voice, and expression. No prior experience is required—just a willingness to listen and share.

Stages to Aging: A Class to Help You Navigate Life’s Later Transitions

Aging is a journey we all share—but many of us feel unprepared for the changes it brings. This spring, Piedmont Adult School is offering Stages to Aging, a practical and empowering class designed to help adults plan for their own aging or better support loved ones.

Participants will explore the five stages of aging—from self-sufficiency and interdependence to dependency, crisis management, and end-of-life planning. The course focuses on understanding available services, learning how to access resources, and making informed decisions at every stage.

Each session features an industry expert addressing a specific aging-related topic. The January–February and March sessions cover different content, so students may benefit from taking one session or both (full details available on our website).

The course is taught by Jennise Mendoza, founder of STAGES for Life, who brings over 17 years of experience working with older adults. Her background as a professional organizer, bookkeeper, legal assistant in Social Security Disability law, and insurance professional offers participants both practical tools and compassionate insight.

💃 Salsa Dance Classes This Spring at Piedmont Adult School!

Ready to move to the rhythm and have some fun? Piedmont Adult School is offering Salsa dance classes this spring—perfect for adults who want to learn (or build on) one of the world’s most joyful and social dances.

✨ Salsa for Beginners
Love Latin music but feel unsure on the dance floor? This class is a welcoming introduction to Salsa as a social dance. You’ll learn basic rhythm, footwork, and partner technique—no prior dance experience or partner required!

🔥 Salsa for the Beginner & Intermediate Dancer
Already know the basics? This class builds on foundational skills with new footwork and partner patterns. Designed for students who’ve completed a beginner course or have prior Salsa experience and confidence leading and following.

👠 Instructor: Carmela Zavaleta
An experienced Bay Area dance instructor with training in classical ballet and social dances including Salsa, tango, swing, and Lindy hop. Carmela has taught throughout the Bay Area in studios, clubs, schools, and community programs.

✨ Understanding Modern Art — Back by Popular Demand! ✨

Ever wondered why modern art looks the way it does — and how it still influences the art we see today? Join us for Understanding Modern Art, a popular two-session evening class designed to make modern art approachable, meaningful, and engaging.

This richly illustrated class explores major artists and movements that shaped modern art, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism, and more. Along the way, you’ll learn helpful art vocabulary so you can talk about art with more confidence — whether in museums or conversations.

The course is taught by Robert Simons, a studio artist and professor emeritus of Holy Names University, with over 40 years of teaching experience. His approach connects art to the historical, cultural, and social ideas behind it — no prior art background required.
