Some beautiful outdoor time today for group class at Musical Life Studio ☀️

The little kids (and the big kids 😉) had fun doing relays to find all the C's and working together to spell words on the staff. We drew some of our music symbols and had a few minutes at the end for doodles too 🖍️ My teens did some rhythm work today too.

The recital coming up at the end of the week too!

Love the community we get to share together.

Exploring what we know (or think we know!) about how the voice works!

This is one of my favorite activities with new singers because it's so revealing and interesting. I love their discovery as they examine where they got their ideas about the voice and share/discuss in a way that's meaningful to them.

Our prompt:

Singers can’t SEE their instruments in the same way an instrumentalist can. So, how DO we sing?

DRAW. Create a picture of the body. Think about the parts of the body needed to breathe and to make sound.

LIST. Make a list of words you associate with the voice.

EXPLAIN. In a few sentences, describe how we breathe and create a sound.

Another wonderful year in the studio. I'm so proud of all of you!

This year at Musical Life, we saw 68 students for 1233 lessons, 34 Group Classes & Masterclasses, and 2 public performances. We also enjoyed our wonderful Apprentice Teacher Allison Renner this summer!

My favorite new addition this year was our Open Mic at the Barnes & Noble. This performance was a hit with our students and the community, and I'm looking forward to planning another in 2024.

Our favorite group activities this year were learning Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" to jam and play together in the spring, and learning my original tune "Graveyard Dance" which is in 5/4 time. The students loved the tune, learning how to create in 5/4, and learning how to compose their own melodies.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to help you grow through the year, to enjoy and create your own music, and to share it with your ensembles, theaters, and churches.

Cheers to another year of playing and growing together!

We brainstormed different types of movement and to inspire transformations to a previously learned song on the FGAB group. I love hearing her intuitive interpretation of each motion in sound.

Leo finished his first piano book! He played the last song "Bugle Boys" with the brass band. 🙂

While I'm away this summer, Allison Renner is at home working with some of my studio as our apprentice teacher.

Allison is a former violin student of mine who is studying piano pedagogy at Cedarville University. Before I left, she came in so I could acquaint her with some of my students and the physical and digital tools available in the studio. I love seeing her growth and transition from student to teacher.

Watching Allison teach invited me to reflect on my own work and growth as a teacher over the last decade.

I was proud of my kids. It was insightful to take a backseat and watch them work with someone else. How would they show up for her? What would stick from their study and practice? What about those deeper layers and structures we explore in their work---listening, theory, form, improvisation? So many of them were comfortable and confident.

And I was proud of myself, because I am an excellent, highly creative, intuitive, and responsive teacher.

I really enjoy this experience of mentoring a younger teacher, and I would love to do more of it!

Another wonderful year in the studio. I'm so proud of all of you!

This year, we saw 42 students for 1400 lessons, 30 Group Lessons & Masterclasses, and 2 recitals.

Our students shared their music with school and community theaters, choirs, churches, family and friends.

We learned how to jam together, write and arrange our own songs, prepare for auditions and performances. We had so much fun in our musical adventures.

I'm so grateful that our studio community finds a cozy, creative space with me to learn and explore.

Cheers to another year of playing and growing together!

Congratulations to Liz, who shared her art song at the Ohio Art Song Competition and won the prize for Audience Choice! We are so proud of your artistry and courage to share your music. ❤️

Several of our students participated in the first annual Ohio Art Song competition. An art song is poetry set to music utilizing classical instruments and voices.

This is Deanna sharing her performance of "Cross the Wide Missouri." Brava, Deanna!

Ever thankful for our special studio community.

A duet to brighten your day! Deanna and Gayana loved learning "Red River Valley" this summer and recorded this special video as a gift for their grandparents. We hope you'll enjoy their sweet music too!
