We wrapped up Hispanic Heritage Week with a little flavor, fun, and dancing at PHS! Students enjoyed Salsa lessons and delicious empanadas as we celebrated Hispanic culture and traditions. Congratulations to Skensy Valverde, the winner of our Hispanic Heritage Question contest!
Thank you to Seรฑora Gamboa and her daughter Gabi for all the hard work they have put into making this week such a fun and educational experience for our students and staff!

Today, our Wind Ensemble came together for a special performance in honor of Cruz Ellenburg.
Mr. Richards shared with us that two weeks ago, some of his students came to him and asked, โ€œCan we play something for Cruz?โ€ That request turned into an opportunity for our students to use music to process and communicate some of the emotions they have been carrying. Music can be an incredible outlet for our students. Sometimes there are feelings that are difficult to put into words, but we can find a way to express them through what we play. Over the past several A-days, the students have been working up this short performance of two pieces: How Great Thou Art and On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss.
Thank you to our Wind Ensemble and Mr. Richards for creating such a meaningful moment and reminding us all of the power of music, faith, and community.

On Tuesday, September 29, Pickens High School Student Body President Molly Brock had the opportunity to attend the SDPC Pickens Area Strategic Planning Showcase and welcome community members and SDPC leaders to the event.
Molly shared to the group about her journey through Pickens County Schools, from Dacusville Elementary and Middle school and now Pickens High School, and the impact that her experiences in our schools have had on her.
We are proud to have student leaders like Molly representing PHS and sharing a student perspective as we look toward the future of Pickens County Schools!

Our PHS Government students have been busy seeing the government in action in Quarter 1!
On September 15th AP Government students had the opportunity to go to Clemson University to hear two cases argued before the South Carolina Supreme Court. Students had recently studied the Supreme Court in class and having this opportunity allowed them to see how the Judicial Branch of government operates.
On October 6th Pickens High School government classes invited Congresswoman Sherri Biggs to our campus. The congresswoman spoke to them about her role in Washington, D.C. and how she is a direct representative to her constituents in SC District 3. She took questions from our students and even stayed around after to answer individual questions from students and staff. It was an honor to have Congresswoman Biggs at PHS and to allow our students to see and hear how, what they learn in class, is put into practice in our Legislative Branch of government.
