Remembering Dolly Parton

Some legacies are measured in songs. Others are found on bookshelves, in bedtime stories, and in the hands of children discovering the joy of a book.

As the world remembers Dolly Parton, IDA-Pennsylvania joins in honoring a remarkable piece of her legacy: her lifelong commitment to literacy.

Inspired by her father's inability to read and write, Dolly founded the Imagination Library in 1995 with a simple but powerful goal: put books into the hands of children. What began in her home county in Tennessee grew into an international program that has gifted more than 300 million books to children around the world.

At IDA-PA, we know that access to books is only one piece of the journey toward literacy. Children also need knowledgeable educators, effective instruction, appropriate support, and communities that believe every child can learn to read.

But before a child can fall in love with a story, there must be a story within reach.

Dolly Parton understood the extraordinary possibilities contained within something as ordinary as a book. Generations of children will continue turning the pages she helped place in their hands.

Could your district or Intermediate Unit be one of the 30 teams selected?

Pennsylvania public school districts and IUs are eligible to apply for IDA-PA’s Free Structured Literacy Leadership Opportunity. Applications are submitted as a team, with a K-3 principal or assistant principal serving as a team member and leader.

Teams may include 3 to 4 educators who are ready to strengthen literacy practices and systems together.

Applications are now open for IDA-PA’s Free Structured Literacy Leadership Opportunity!

Through this scholarship initiative, 30 Pennsylvania public school district and Intermediate Unit teams will be selected to participate in professional learning at no cost to their district or IU.

Designed to support systems-level literacy improvement, this opportunity focuses on evidence-based literacy practices, implementation, sustainable systems change, and alignment with Pennsylvania’s Act 47 literacy requirements, particularly within K-3.
