I was trying to help my nephew with a simple project last weekend and I was shocked that he had never even held a hammer before. It seems like our schools have moved so far away from practical skills that our kids do not know how to fix a basic shelf. We have spent years telling every child they need a degree, but we have forgotten the value of being able to work with your hands. We need to bring back woodwork and metalwork classes to give our youngsters a bit of confidence and common sense.

You gain a real sense of pride when you make something useful from scratch. These classes used to be the highlight of the week for many of us who were not naturally academic. It taught us patience, safety, and the value of hard work. Not every child wants to sit in front of a computer all day. We should be encouraging our lads and lasses to learn the trades that actually keep our houses standing and our cars running. It is about preparing them for the real world and giving them skills they can use for the rest of their lives.

Do you agree that we need a return to more practical and vocational subjects in our local schools? It is time to stop looking down on manual skills and start celebrating the people who can actually build and repair things. Let us give our young people a reason to be proud of their practical abilities once again. We need to bridge the gap between theory and real work. AGREE? 🇬🇧
