the weight of this moment in education.

This is not a sales pitch. This is not a political statement. This is what we have to say about what we have been watching - and about what we built in response to it.

The student did not create this situation. The student still deserves an education. That right does not pause while the adults figure it out. I want to share where I come from before I share what we built.

I am a teaching artist who has done residencies in schools across the country. I am a parent of a child who went through the traditional system. I am a homeschooling parent today. I have sat
at nearly every table in this conversation.

STEAMESA OpUs was not born in a boardroom. It was born out of necessity. I built it because I needed it to exist for my own household, and it did not. It grew organically from there.

Then in 2003, I had a fire at my studio. If you have ever had your footing pulled out from under you without warning, you know what that does to everything. But my son's education was the one thing that did not stop — because the infrastructure was already in place.

That is when I understood what it actually means to build something sovereign. It means it holds when nothing else does.
