ACCEL provides many different therapeutic interventions to help our students achieve their goals, but a student favorite is definitely music therapy. Maria Chase Young, a Board Certified Music Therapist at ACCEL's East Campus, is honored to watch student’s progress and learn through music.
Music therapy helps with speech, motor, communication, and academic goals in a fun, non-threatening way. One of our students, Daniel is a huge fan of music time.
Maria shares that this is an ocean drum that simulates the soothing sound of the surf. She uses this for calming, following directions, and listening purposes. When she uses it with students who are non-verbal, like Daniel, she can use sign language and his alternative device to work on communication skills and to make choices.
Daniel asked for another turn by signing “more." When they were finished with this session “all done” was used. Music therapy allows Daniel to make choices and to communicate in a novel environment in which music is used as a tool for communication skills that can be generalized to other environments.
Everyday we see ACCEL students make real and lasting progress towards their goals. Because of you we are able to provide a variety of therapeutic services—including music therapy—to make sure that everyone can thrive! Thank you!
