Though it’s hard to believe, our 2022 Main Event has passed, and gratitude is in order.

We thank our 9 speakers for the ideas they shared and the conversations that will follow long after.

We thank the GCU Arena staff for dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s.

We thank our sponsors and supporters for making our 6th year of existence possible.

Most of all, we thank you for joining us on a multi-faceted exploration of POWER.

We hope that we’ve served as a platform for fresh ideas that otherwise may be unknown.

Stay tuned for what’s next,

- The TEDxGrandCanyonUniversity team ❌

Every parent wants their kid to be somebody.

Typically, the motivation behind this desire comes from a place of love and care.

However, as human beings, we often conflate our personal identity with literal and figurative key performance indicators. We’re exposed to this as early as birth – though subtly, and we succumb to its power with time.

Attempting to break this cycle in his life and research, JA Plosker explained that becoming a nobody – regardless of how counterintuitive it sounds – is a surprisingly liberating state of mind.

On February 4th, TEDxGCU held its annual CATALYST event – witnessing its largest turnout to date as 70 local high schoolers momentarily joined the team in exploring the essence of the “TED talk.”

It began with a detailed tour of Canyon Ventures, then students were divided into 11 groups led by our Team Members and Directors.

The curriculum entailed five segments: Types of Talks, The “Throughline,” The Structure, The Curation, and “Talk like TED.”

At the end, one representative from each group took the daring step to give their talk on the red circle – conquering fears of a room full of unfamiliar faces. The winning team received VIP tickets to our Main Event in April.

Ultimately, it was a huge opportunity for our team to foster growth and confidence in the next generation through the TEDx platform.

Led by Elise and Vanessa, the Operations team handles logistics – just about everything in an event. From venues, vendors, and seats, they ensure that everything is organized practically and usefully for all guests while remaining within budget. To properly plan these details and even anticipate potential problems, they rely heavily on flexible interpersonal communication skills. Though their focus is directed towards the Main Event in April, they manage an array of tasks throughout the school year.

A word not confined to a singular dictionary definition...

It’s found in the lights you turn on, the words you speak, the emotions you feel, the influence you wield.

It’s everywhere.

On April 8th, TEDxGrandCanyonUniversity will scratch the surface of ways mankind interacts with this word — exploring innovative ideas that have otherwise remained unknown.

More hours always = More things done

Well, not quite.

At our 2020 Main Event, Rian Dorris shared how clinging to this preconceived notion led to burnout in his own life.

Based on this unconventional look at work, we discover that LESS could actually be MORE.

It begins by revisiting our outlook on productivity.

Led by Daniel Farrington and Isai Gomez, the goal of the Speaker Acquisition team is to find people who possess “ideas worth spreading. Each member is a “Speaker Advocate” who participates in sifting through speaker candidates, developing the application process, selecting the final roster, and coaching them until they stand on the red circle. This team works with remarkable individuals who are notable in their respective fields as they create and curate their TED Talk.

Self-care ISN’T selfish – BUT we often act like it is.

As a result, the relationship with our own self suffers.
At our 2020 Main Event, Jessica Brubaker provided a blueprint towards a more responsible, profound version of self-care.

At some point, we’ve all come to realize that life entails an unpredictable collection of disappointments and hardships.

For many, regardless of the circumstances, this loss of innocence curated an aversion towards failure and tragedy alike.

It’s easy to overlook the culmination of learning + character development + introspection + etc. that occurs in spite of (AND because of) these experiences.

At our 2021 Main Event, Tyson Motsenbocker echoed his mother’s unique outlook on celebrating the unorthodox marriage of joy and sorrow.

Life truly isn’t a bed of roses – yet there is beauty in acknowledging the coexistence between the flowers and thorns.

“I wanna do [this]...”

“I wanna be [that]...”

Oftentimes, when it comes to personal dreams, infatuation hinders realization.

Basking in the future’s potential rewards might provide a deceiving, premature sense of satisfaction – detracting from the determination, dedication, and discipline required in the present-day process.

At our 2021 Main Event, Zack Honorvar urged the audience to snap out of this appealing yet hampering status quo.

There are no magic words or secret formulas – just PLANNING then DOING in the here and now.

Walking your talk could very well change the course of your life.

Don’t settle for what’s nonexistent.

As the COVID-19 pandemic exemplified, the expertise of healthcare workers is always in high demand.

While their life-saving skillsets and medicinal knowledge have clear significance, there is one intangible offering that can’t be overlooked – the element of human connection.

Found at the heart and essence of these professions, it is sometimes buried in the busyness and procedural nature of it all.

At our 2021 Main Event, Dr. Anthony Orsini, D.O. provided a simple yet effective roadmap for healthcare workers to re-calibrate a patient-focused approach.

Human connection isn’t just a part of healthcare.

It makes it better.

Thanksgiving has passed, but the conversation of GRATITUDE persists.

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all the others.”
- Cicero

“Give thanks in all circumstances…”
1 Thessalonians 5:18a (ESV)

It’s safe to say that being grateful is praised universally, but what are the tangible benefits of maintaining this posture?

At our 2021 Main Event, Tye Dutcher described how gratitude quite literally reconfigures our brains.

What have you been reluctant to embrace with gratitude?

What would it look like if this power was unleashed within your brain and into your life?

Photos from TEDxgrandcanyonuniversity's post 11/30/2021

What is it that you’re waiting for?

The perfect timing?
The right people?
Or even, that elusive once-in-a-lifetime opportunity?

These are big asks, and life is never as ideal as we’d want it to be.

At our 2021 Main Event, Jodi King highlighted the simple yet daring child-like spirit to leap into one’s dreams long BEFORE they’re fully realized.

Maybe -- just maybe -- being a rockstar [in any capacity] is making a promise you CAN’T KEEP.

Then developing yourself into the person who CAN.

But, you’ll never know unless you SHOW UP.

We’re ALL EARS here at TEDxGrandCanyonUniversity!

Is your idea worth spreading?

You decide.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Let’s take a moment and highlight Gratitude, Purpose, and Fulfillment.

[The food on the table is cold, and the primetime football game has faded into a background noise…] We’ve found ourselves at this point of the day contemplating -- even momentarily -- the fundamental reasons why we celebrate this time-honored holiday.

We might revert to the easy answer: gratitude. And yet this entails the inevitably intertwined, complex concepts of purpose and fulfillment.

“What is my purpose? Once I figure that part out, how can I live in a manner that garners fulfillment and gratitude?”

That’s a tough question, and these past TED talks aren’t the end-all be-all solutions. They may not even be the answers some of us seek -- but they’re insightful steps in the right direction towards responsive (not just reflective) actions.
