Hello Friends and Colleagues,

Because of the extensive comments and discussion and the wealth of topics covered in the last webinar on “The Early Twentieth Century,” I am offering as a free event, Part Two on this important and highly transformative period in human history and the evolution of science fiction. Beginning from the numerous influential dystopian novels of the era, such as We, City of Endless Night, and Brave New World, in Part Two we’ll highlight and discuss: the emergence of the first science fiction magazines (Amazing Stories and Wonder Stories) through the efforts of Hugo Gernsback; fandom, early science fiction communities, and science fiction becoming a social movement; the beginnings of science fiction super-heroes, such as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon; women in science fiction, as writers and lead characters; and the continued evolution of science fiction art and cinema, culminating in the resplendent artistic productions of Aelita: Queen of Mars, Woman in the Moon, and Metropolis at the end of the “silent era.” The early decades of the twentieth century were a time of great upheaval and change, and we will continue our dialogue from the previous webinar on the relevance of this era to understanding our contemporary times. The Evolution of Science Fiction Webinar Series:
Module Nine - The Early Twentieth Century: Dystopias, Disasters, Fantastic Adventures, Films, & the Pulps (1900 - ca.1930)

The early decades of the twentieth century were a time of great transformation, artistically, scientifically, technologically, and socially. While Wells was creating both dystopian warnings and futurist utopias and arguing for a “new world order” during this period, numerous other writers and visionaries were expanding the scope of science fiction across diverse dimensions of entertainment, speculation, and social engagement. Early in the century, science fiction cinema emerged in the fantastical early films of Méliès and evolved in the next couple decades into the resplendent productions of Aelita: Queen of Mars, Woman in the Moon, and Metropolis. Science fiction comics and super-heroes, such as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, came on the scene, and through the efforts of Hugo Gernsback the first science fiction pulp magazines (Amazing Stories and Wonder Stories) were published. Fandom and science fiction communities appeared and quickly grew, turning science fiction into a social movement. Displayed in all the brilliant colors of the rainbow, science fiction art blossomed. And an unprecedented plethora and cornucopia of new writers and wondrous stories appeared, including the immensely popular adventure tales of Burroughs; the cosmic far-future horrors of Hodgson; the prescient dystopias of Zamyatin, Hastings, and Huxley; the phantasmagorias of Merritt and Lindsay; and disasters galore, such as Shiel’s The Purple Cloud, Doyle’s The Poison Belt, and England’s Darkness and Dawn. In a review of these trends, writers, and stories, and more, in this webinar we will go on a psychedelic trip of human imagination and foresight.

Hello Friends and Colleagues,

The Evolution of Science Fiction Webinar Series: Module Eight
H. G. Wells: The Father of Modern Science Fiction - The Father of Modern Futures Studies

H. G. Wells is one of the most creative, influential, and prolific writers and thinkers in both modern science fiction and modern futures studies. Author of over 120 fiction and non-fiction books, he wrote on human and natural history; evolution and life; politics, society, education, and economics; time travel, alien invasion, alien societies, biotechnology, and space travel; future war and atomic weaponry; numerous dystopias and utopias; and the future evolution of humanity. In this webinar, devoted entirely to Wells, we will examine the evolution of his philosophy and seminal publications from his youth (such as, “The Man of the Year Million” and “Human Evolution, An Artificial Process”); through his early great science fiction novels (including The Time Machine, The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Invisible Man, The First Men in the Moon, and The War of the Worlds); his groundbreaking futurist writings (notably The Discovery of the Future, Anticipations, and The Open Conspiracy); and his later utopian and dystopian narratives and speculations (among them, The Food of the Gods, A Modern Utopia, The War in the Air, The Sleeper Awakes, The World Set Free, Men Like Gods, and The Shape of Things to Come).

Evolution & the Late Nineteenth Century: Utopias, Robots, the Mystical, & the Martians

In the late 19th century, two apparently opposed scientific viewpoints, the theories of evolution and entropy, emerge as fundamental perspectives on cosmic and natural change. These contrasting archetypal narratives would greatly influence science fiction. Covered in this webinar, in the last three decades of the 19th century a giant wave of future war novels were written; many new utopias were created; in Flammarion the cosmic and the spiritual were intricately woven together; future human evolution was examined in The Power of the Coming Race; and there were numerous tales of automata and robots. We repeatedly visited the Martians, and the Martians invaded us.

The Evolution of Science Fiction: Module Five Enlightenment, Romanticism, and the Gothic (1750-1820) 11/10/2020

Friends & Colleagues -- You are invited to join me:

New Evolution of Science Fiction Webinar: Module Five
Enlightenment, Romanticism, and the Gothic (1750-1820)

Saturday, November 21 2020, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM [EST] (On Zoom)

Hope and fear, our two fundamental anticipatory emotions regarding the future, come to center stage in human consciousness and the evolution of science fiction during the Western Enlightenment and the subsequent Age of Romanticism and the Gothic. In fact, reason and science versus passion and sensation also clash and swirl around each other during this epochal period in the history of science fiction. The Western theory of future progress is both embraced and defended and attacked and ridiculed. Utopias and dystopias are written, and narrative visions of benevolent spirits and hideous monsters are created. In our imagination we begin to journey into the solar system, as well as deep into the unknown interior of the earth, and we dive into depression, obsession, and despair in the classic works of Frankenstein and The Last Man. We travel both into outer space and the inner space of the human mind. We are visited by aliens in Voltaire’s Micromegas and we visit them in Davy’s The Last Days of a Philosopher. The past and the future fight it out, and Prometheus is both “unbound” and shackled again. Amidst the awe and the terror experienced over the future and the unknown, comedy and satire also become important elements in the ongoing evolution of science fiction. All in all, during this time we both see the light and run into the darkness.

Module Four: The Rise of Science and Modernity (1500-1750)

November 7, 2020 at 12 to 1:30 pm EST

Beginning with the European “Age of Exploration,” in this new webinar we discuss, how did the Scientific Revolution transform our understanding of nature, ourselves, and the heavens above? How did scientific and religious visions of reality of the period both clash and harmonize in thinking about the possibilities of the future and extraordinary adventures into the unknown? Other topics examined include: Bruno, Fontenelle, and Huygens‘ seminal speculations on alien worlds and alien intelligence; Leibniz’s vision of cosmic evolution; Kepler’s journey to the moon; and the earliest modern utopias.
