Congratulations to Westwood Decathlete, Thor Eckman, on his wonderful achievement! The Arizona Academic Decathlon Board is so proud of all you've accomplished.
π We are so proud! Today, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation named Thor Eckman one of about 7,500 high school seniors who will receive a National Merit Scholarship. A passionate mathematician, Thor qualified as a semifinalist thanks to his outstanding academic record, awards, extracurricular activities and a special endorsement from his alma mater, Westwood High School. Thank you, Thor, for exemplifying Mesa's Portrait of a Graduate.

2022 National Competition Results - Arizona Academic Decathlon
The Virtual National competition took place April 20-22. Hamilton placed 4th in Division I and 6th overall in the nation with a score of 41,438. We would like to congratulate the three teams and decathletes who represented Arizona at USAD's Online National competition!
BASIS Peoria came in 2nd place in Small Schools, winning 17 medals. Red Mountain came in 5th place in Large Schools, winning 5 medals. And Show Low came in 11th place in Medium Schools, winning 1 medal.

USAD calls the Super Quiz the loudest and most intense, high-stakes celebration of all the subjects the decathletes have learned, and it's hard to disagree! Students collaborate in groups of three to figure out the best answer to each question before time runs out. Let's get ready to rumble!

We are beginning day two of our virtual state competition!
Our decathletes have already submitted an essay and delivered speeches and interviews via Zoom with judges all over the country. Today they will take seven objective tests, compete in Super Quiz using Kahoot, and attend a virtual award ceremony.

Tonight, the decathletes deliver both prepared and impromptu speeches and conduct a seven-minute interview before a panel of judges. Many former decathletes cite learning to speak in public as one of their most transformative experiences in the program.
