You read that right…how you tolerate pain in your everyday life does not determine how you will tolerate labor. We repeat, 🗣️ you do not need a high pain tolerance to have an unmedicated birth. 🗣️
Why not, you ask? Your body is naturally equipped to reduce pain in labor, but you have to learn how to ✨trust✨ your body to do its thing. This is why GOOD childbirth education + preparation is so important. You have to understand (and then practice) aligning your body, mind, and soul to prepare for a positive natural birth experience.
Your body is magical. It knows what it’s doing. When a woman is laboring, her body releases ✌️ specific hormones that help reduce pain and increase pleasure…
✅ Oxytocin, commonly referred to as the "love hormone,” helps a woman to progress through labor with ease.
✅ Beta-endorphin. This natural opioid can help the body to produce sensations that are comparable to a large dose of morphine. (How cool is that?!)
So don’t believe the lies…if you cried when you got your ears pierced, or yell profanities when you stub your toe, you CAN still have a natural, unmedicated birth. And with the right preparation, a really beautiful one.

Listen, we don't mean that creating a birth plan will save you from anything moving off course. Birth, by nature, is wildly unpredictable.
Here's what we mean. ➡️
When you set out to accomplish anything in life, you know that having a plan and having goals is important. If you're working to run a marathon, you'll research necessary nutrition, training plans, and buy the right shoes for your feet. When you're home shopping, you set goals, have expectations and educate yourself on the process knowing full well that obstacles may pop up along the way.
In the same sense, birth should be prepared for. We often hear moms say they don't want to set goals for natural birth because they don't want end up disappointed. But here's the thing…not taking the time to set goals and best prepare for them leaves room for error. If you don't know what your preferences are, you leave space for someone else to make those choices for you. The easiest way to end up disappointed is to have not planned anything.
There's nothing wrong with wanting certain things from your birth. Own that. Set expectations, and then surround ourself with people who honor those choices and empower you as your birth unfolds.

It’s World Doula Week, and we’re over here celebrating the fact that we even get to do this work. Seriously, sometimes we have to pinch ourselves to make sure we’re not dreaming. Standing by the sides of so many women as they come into their power and strength as a mother is jaw dropping. It’s really the coolest.
THANK YOU for opening up your lives and allowing us into some of your most sacred moments. The weight of that decision is never lost on us.
And a big shoutout to all of the doulas we’ve met on this journey, or have yet to meet. You. Are. Amazing.
Hug a doula if you happen to bump into one soon. We’ll hug you right back!
