This should be mandatory for all residents, midwives, and nurses who work in obstetrics. What sets Her way aside of most providers is his trust in birth and his lack of fear.
Over the last three years I have gotten to work alongside this man. Tired, overworked, unwelcomed, under appreciated, under the microscope I have watched this man show up for women in a way I cannot quite put into words.
I am not the type of person who is interested in making any one look like a saint. Bc we are all human and we all have plenty of flaws.
But as I wrap up my last week at BUMC, a tertiary care center, an academic institution….. I will say this. I have been in WIS 25 years. And I have come to know many of wonderful providers. Because there are many. But there are few who are willing to sacrifice their life, their families, and their overall well being to see that change is being made. Most good providers stay in the hamster wheel and go with the flow of things bc going against the grain will cost you deeply in our field.
This is the man that should be leading their lectures. This is the man that should be mentoring, training, and teaching the lost skills of obstetrics.
Yet somehow they’ve managed to make it too difficult. To tiring. Too complicated.
Hervey is one of the few providers that bridges those that no longer trust our medical system. He’s always a soft landing spot for people who have been hurt by our broken healthcare system.
Working alongside him felt like home. First assisting him felt like butter. Hervey was the first OB I’ve worked with who introduced me as his colleague. He’s the OB to defend me in a room of providers not even knowing the story but knowing me.
He held space for me when I couldn’t practice in my community due to politics and undesirable working conditions. He gave me a home and a safe space for my patients.
My heart will always be fond of Dr Hervey. His devotion to human rights. His feminist perspective in a patriarchal world and hospital system.
I’ll be heading back to the West Valley to care for my community. And although that brings me great joy…. I’ll leave a piece of my heart downtown.
