Well this sucks! Just got this email

Brother Riddle,
On behalf of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Sigma Chi International Fraternity, I regret to inform you that the EC has suspended the charter of the Epsilon Upsilon chapter at Arizona State University. The suspension is effective immediately.

The Epsilon Upsilon chapter was found to be engaging in repeated violations of the Fraternity's health and safety policies, including unacceptable behaviors such as serious hazing and other activities that placed members and pledges in an unsafe environment. These behaviors were far removed from the principles and values of the Fraternity, and we were compelled to act swiftly.

The Epsilon Upsilon chapter of Sigma Chi has been a strong contributor to the Fraternity for many years, and it will be again. It is our intention to be able to recharter the chapter in the future. Those efforts begin now with planning for the rechartering, preparing alumni involvement that will ensure the transgressions of the chapter never occur again, and working in partnership with Arizona State University to establish a timeline. I highly encourage the brothers of the Epsilon Upsilon chapter to take the following steps now:

1. Assign a point person who will assist the International Fraternity with coordinating the rechartering efforts and serve as the conduit between the International Fraternity and the chapter’s alumni.
2. Consider the Bell Colony rechartering model as we work toward reactivating the chapter in the future and begin to secure funding for that effort. Director of Expansion Desmond Robinson, TARLETON STATE 2015, can provide more information. He can be reached at [email protected].
3. Identify alumni in the Phoenix area who are willing to be actively involved in advising and supporting the future members of the chapter.

While it is the Fraternity's goal to return the chapter to Arizona State University, we have not, at this time, produced a timetable for doing so. As you can surely understand, we want to be certain that our next effort to establish a Sigma Chi presence at Arizona State will create an environment conducive to the positive character development of every man who ultimately joins the Fraternity. We will periodically evaluate the university environment and the state of its Greek-letter community to determine the earliest possibility for a return to campus.

As to the chapter members who are still enrolled at the university, their status has changed to “suspended active status.” The term “suspended active status” means that each member is recognized as an initiate of the Epsilon Upsilon chapter but is strictly prohibited from engaging in anything that could be conceived of as a Sigma Chi activity until 2025.

I hope that you understand why this decision was necessary for the overall good of Sigma Chi. Please know that it is heartbreaking when the Fraternity loses a chapter. Still, the severity of these circumstances at the chapter and its members’ failure to uphold the obligations of Sigma Chi made the decision compulsory.

As I encourage the lines of communication between the Fraternity and its members to remain open and honest, the associate executive director at International Fraternity Headquarters, Bill Scott, ARIZONA 1980, will be the assigned conduit for questions and planning for the return of the chapter. He may be reached at [email protected] or (847) 425-4467.
