Meet the rebellious cast of AZHT's Matilda JR! 📅 May 14-16!

🚂🎼ALL ABOARD!!! It's opening night of Hadestown at SCP / Greasepaint Youtheatre!! This incredible production of one of my all-time favorite shows features AZHT actors Oliver Christie as Hades and Sam Roalofs as Worker, along with the rest of a stellar cast, a dream creative team, and a 🔥7-member LIVE BAND!!! 🎹🪗🎻🎸🥁🎺 Trust me when I say you do NOT want to miss this event!

Break legs, everyone! We cannot WAIT to see you tear it up on stage! 😍🤩😍🤩

Oliver acted with AZHT from 2015-23, also taking on the role of student director for two productions. While Oliver went from AZHT to Greasepaint, Sam came from Greasepaint to AZHT last fall when he began homeschooling. We met Sam in the fall of 2023 when Sam played Eric and Oliver played Mr. Wormwood in Matilda the Musical at Greasepaint. They've appeared together in several shows there since, and now Sam will appear as Bruce in Matilda with AZHT May 14-16. 🍫🎂

PlayFest opened last night to a sold out house! You can see it through April 26 at Spotlight Youth Theatre. PlayFest features AZHT actor Torben Axman and AZHT alum Dash Tagge two original plays, including one written by AZHT actor Lucy Currie. Fun fact: Torben was Scarecrow, Lucy was the Tin Man, and Dash was the Cowardly Lion in AZHT's The Wizard of Oz Youth Edition 3 years ago. You can also see Torben as Agatha Trunchbull in our production of Matilda JR with AZHT in May 14 and 16!

Congrats to all our actors who auditioned on Monday! For many of you, it was your first time auditioning altogether—or your first musical! We are so proud of you all and can’t wait to begin rehearsals on Monday.

Thank you, SCP / Greasepaint Youtheatre, for this beautiful insight into the casting process, especially in educational theatre. This is such a familiar scene, and what we, too, strive for.

Our creative team is currently working on casting our next show, Matilda JR! We spend days after auditions considering every single young actor who has decided to join our cast and how best to help them succeed in this endeavor. With spreadsheets, rosters, character lists, scripts, audition videos, and audition forms—over phone calls, video conferences, emails, and texts—we make multiple drafts, checking, rechecking, refining, and imagining.

Our goal is learning and growth; challenges but not obstacles; encouragement without pressure; building up, not undermining; fitting the pieces of our puzzle together to tell the whole story; finding opportunities to shine—and, of course, providing lots of fun!

We are putting the finishing touches on our cast list email! Stay tuned Matilda JR families!
